YEAR/MODEL DESIGNATIONS 3 Years, 2 Months ago
I just went through the Star web site parts catalogs and identified all the models I could (California variants are listed for all except as noted, and a few are ONLY listed as California models) I've done US only models, as I have no database for worldwide production.
I've filled in all the model designations I know. Please help me fill in the blanks so we can put this up for everyone to find. Unidentified variants have a help line.

ALL 2001-2003 1600's are subject to the transmission recall. Yamaha Technical Bulletin M2004-001 outlines the repair procedure- Text of the recall reads as such:

Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety
exists in certain 2001 XV16 (“Road Star,” “Midnight Star,” and “Road Star Silverado”) model motorcy-
cles, and in 2002 and 2003 XV16 (“Road Star,” “Road Star Limited Edition,” “Midnight Star,” and “Road
Star Silverado”) motorcycles. In affected motorcycles, certain transmission components may not meet
Yamaha quality-control standards, which could allow abnormal wear that eventually results in a broken
retaining circlip. If the circlip breaks, the transmission could lock up, which would also cause the rear
wheel to lock up. This could result in loss of control and a vehicle crash with injury or death.
To correct this defect, Yamaha is initiating a Factory Modification Campaign. Affected motorcycles must
have certain transmission components replaced with new ones.
Yamaha is notifying all registered owners of affected motorcycles by mail. A copy of this letter is includ-
ed in this bulletin. The customer should take the letter along with the affected motorcycle to an autho-
rized Yamaha dealer for the modification. -- You can take your VIN to your Yamaha dealership and they can run the VIN and see if the recall repair has been done.

Earlier 1600's (through mid 2002 production) had an issue with an oil pump gear that was not very durable, and they do break. This item was NOT a recall item, and there is no way to know if the pump gear has been replaced in your bike unless you did it yourself.

The advisory bulletin for the oil pump gear reads as follows:

Later production models have an upgraded oil pump gear assembly. This high rpm oil pump gear assembly is NOT required if your motorcycle's Primary ID is as follows:

You're missing some too ... I have an 08 XV1700AWX - Canadian spec bike. When I went to yamaha-motor.ca and used their parts catalogue's bike selector tool, it gives me a different colour for my bike description. Sure enough I dropped my VIN in there and it had everything including the correct colour.

You may wish to try the parts catalogue for Star Motorcycles USA and see if it's an option to go through the various model classifications.

I did just that. Apparently you did not read the first sentence of my post. I can't speak to Canadian model designations. They are not listed in the US site.

Including California variants, I identified 109 models. You identified exactly one. Spend a couple of hours and make me a Canadian list if you'd like to make a valuable contribution for us.

Not being an ass, but if a guy gives me ONE model from Canada, Spain or Australia, that's not a great big help.

Are there designators for the Wild Star, for instance, that show the market destination?

In yours, for instance, the XV17, is, of course, the basic machine. The "A" is the base model (an AT is a Silverado) the X is the year sequence letter for 2008 models, and the W, Well, I don't know what the W is. That is useful information if you, or anyone else, has it. White, maybe? Wheel type designator?

The Fuelies have convoluted designations that are different from the carb bikes.

The 2008 AWXC models for California do not have the back rest included. Instead it comes with eyebrows where the back rest supports should be. It also has a different instrument panel cover and the rear shock is a different setup. The "standard" pre-load for the AWXC model is 1.67 inches. All others is 1.79 inches.

The wet weight for these models are 743lbs which is the same as the ASXC models. All others are 774lbs.

What the L and W stand for in the AWXC models I have no clue. You started this, finish it

I guess the L could be for limited? The W, not sure. So is it a "California Special". Lol

Trying to do a service here. Thanks for the input.

In most cases the L & W are color codes, blue & white respectively.
