You won't regret going pumpless. I did it six months ago and love it. Used the info on this forum and now I am getting better gas mileage,

Just caught this part...

I'm assuming the better mileage is because the jetting/float level was corrected during the process.

Is anyone else going to say that losing the pump helps mileage... ?

If they replaced the old needle and seat, that could have made the difference. Once they start letting fuel past the oring that seals the seat in place, the mileage heads downhill fast.

Re:Fuel pump fail update 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Update and a question: all the parts are in and my mechanic has them in hand. I printed many pages of information from then forum to asset with the carb set up. What I didn't print or we couldn't find was the float setting infomation. My mechanic was saying something about raising it and mentioned "clips" but I could not give him a firm answer. He said he would look through all the paperwork but I figured I could get a fast answer here. I have known my mechanic for a few years now and he is a good dude and quite reasonable but I would rather not pay hime to read! Any help would be appreciated.

The Yamaha method, is to check the float level setting with the carb on the bike, and a small tube attached to the bowl drain. The bike must be setting upright(like on a lift), not leaning on the side stand.

You check the level on the intake manifold side of the carb, not the air cleaner side. The tube works like a water level. The tube slips on the bowl drain, and loops around so you can hold it against the corner of the carb, on the intake manifold side. Open the bowl drain screw, and the tube will fill with gas, to the level of gas in the bowl(keep the end of the tube higher then the level of fuel in the bowl, or it'll just drain out of the tube).
Open the petcock(on bikes with a pump, the key must be on so the pump can fill the bowl).
The level should be set at 4mm above the bowl to carb mating surface on the intake manifold side of the carb, not the air cleaner side.

Your mech will read this and say, "While that's dumb. If you have to make an adjustment, you have to take it all back apart, remove the bowl, tweak the tab on the float and put it back together and recheck it. This could go on for awhile!!!!" Once he says or understands this simple detail, you'll know he understands.

I put mine here as well. Now I have to be careful not to hit it with my leg when sitting on the bike. The Dragger seat puts my thigh right there.

Re:Fuel pump fail update 8 Months ago
I wanted to update my post as my bike is now pumpless!! I was able to have a local mechanic complete the work as it seemed a little much for me to execute with my level of expertise. So far the bike runs quite well and I suspect it will stay that way. It is with much gratitude I send this put to all who provided insight, judgement, technical support and some soft nudging along the way. The cleaned up left side looks better in person than in pictures. My enricher knob is placed on a mount held by the tank bolt. I took a couple of photos and will try to get them posted as I know its a B.S. if proof isn't provided!! Not sure what comes next beyond L.O.F and checking my nuts! Thanks to all here and safe riding.
