$7, ten min exhaust performance upgrade. 3 Weeks, 4 Days ago
While looking for ways to quiet my Bassani's I came across Thunder Torque Inserts from DK products; which is a common mod for HD guys with drag pipes. They're not really intended for sound, but from what I read, they do lower the tone a bit and at $18.95, seemed like it might be worth a try.

They go into the end of the pipe:

However, this led me to "lollipops" which you've probably seen similar variations, even here on the Clinic... Well I figured it was worth a trip to my local hardware store; so I used the screw hole that holds the end cap on the megaphone. This way I didn't have to drill anything out. It's 1/4 -20 screw so I picked up a same size eyelet bolt and a couple large fender washers.

$6.87 and ten minutes later, and sure enough, I gained a noticeable torque increase throughout low and mid range; which is were we spend most of our time. Even cruising at highway speeds feels better. It did change the sound slightly, but is mores worth it for the torque increase. It's certainly worth a try if you're bored and looking for a new cheap an easy mod. Hell, I'd recommend it for any open pipes, not just Bassani's.

Interesting.

I always wanted to try the lollipops but didn't want to drill my pipes. The guys with the baffles on the end had more options.

How's the sound?
I know some of the reports stated it did not change much. (obviously going to vary according to your pipes)

Nice seeing a bike article in this bike forum.

I did the big city baffles in my Samson pipes. They were open pipes, no baffles.. the big city are basically lollipops. The volume stayed the same pretty much but it took the baffle free rasp out of them. I was happy.

I used baling wire to attach 2” bathroom sink strainers to the existing baffles on my Vulcan 800 with drag pipes. Sounds great.

Took the bike out for a little run today and dialed in the PMS. [Leaned it out from 3 turns to 2.5] BOY HOWDY! Best $6.87 I've spent on my R*!

Now mind you, my pipes, while they have a baffle, are straight through; like the Hard Khromes or drag pipes... So this thing breaks up the pulse wave that travels up and down the exhaust pipe and prevents interference from the escaping exhaust gases when the pulse wave reaches the exhaust port. Or "Harmonic Reversion" [i.e. It helps the motor breath more freely.]

Check out this video for a great demonstration of exactly how that works. The entire video is worth watching, but if you're in a hurry, jump to 2:55 for the part about Harmonic Reversion.

As for sound, the overall volume hasn't changed much, but it's definitely got a more low tone... However it also has some new higher tones as well. I'm going to play with the lollipop configuration and see if I can lessen the higher frequencies by adding another washer or even stacking a few, like a silencer. I may even get a longer eyelet, since right now it's a little off center. [see photo below] I don't suspect raising the lollipop will effect performance, but may help with the tone. I might even see if I can get a larger fender washer. The one in the photo is about 2" across; it was the largest one they had. My pipes are pretty big at 4 inches so you'd probably be fine with 2 inches or less depending on your pipes.

Made a set for my straight several years ago. I had the original “snuff- or- nots” back in the day on my Honda. They came out in the 60’s and were popular on scrambler type bikes. They work!

Wire these to that vertical rod I see inside the pipe and you don’t have to drill any holes.

Interesting concept. A longer eye bolt to center things. A larger washer or maybe a washer, nut, and then secondary smaller washer (pyramid effect) could alter things to your liking.

SUCCESS!! ...sorta.

Well I managed to dial everything in today to the point where I got the ideal sound and performance!

I was all ready to post my results when... I got home this evening from my ride and one of the lollipops was missing! It sheered off right at the lower nut!

Oh well, back to the drawing board... I'll have to see if I can find either a grade 8 or stainless eye bolt.

Up to that point everything was awesome; so stay tuned.

I wouldn't want to be riding behind any of you guys running that homemade crap in your exhaust. Yours is a perfect example of a steel rocket coming out of the exhaust pipe when it broke. It may have even taken out the windshield of a car behind you and you would never know.
