I have seen a tread about these but not sure what they are and the benefits of them?

Ok, stupid question time.
What is the advantage over stock wires?
I have a 2006, I have not noticed any starting problems, what am I not noticing?
Thanks

according to AWG standards stock 8ga wire can carry 72 amps, so, lets do the math:
stock starter motor .8Kw/12v = 66.66 amps that is being pulled. thats only 6amps less than what the wire can handle and thats ideal conditions
Warrior starter motor .9Kw/12v = 75amps 3 amps over rated wire
Thunderfire starter 1Kw/12 = 83.33amps 11amps over rated wire
Thunderfire high output starter 1.4Kw/12 = 116.66amps

when more current goes thru a wire than it can handle it causes heat, heat causes a rise in resistance, resistance causes a voltage drop, voltage drop causes a increase in amps. Turns into a vicious cycle.

My wires handle 150 amps, it will even handle the Thunderfire high output motor, however, the stock starter relay cannot since it is rated at 100 amps, you must use at a minimum the Warrior relay, rated at 150amps.

As wires age, tarnish and oxidize, it increases resistance, which of course causes a voltage drop. Stock wires are not tinned (marine grade)the terminals are an open crimp and not tinned either. I tested my voltage drop (loss) between the Pos battery post to the starter motor, I was losing as much as 1.2v. So lets say my battery is @ 12.6v, but because of the voltage drop of 1.2v, only 11.4v is actually getting to the starter motor. My wire produced only a .2v loss.

However, what was more concerning was the results I saw from the OEM pigtail ground connection. My stock wire was fairly oxidized on this little 4inch of wire. I have a voltmeter in my fairing, with new marine grade wire for the pigtail, I see that my on-board voltmeter is reading approx 1/4 to 1/3 volt higher.

Hope that answers your ques.?

My wires get hot. The bike always has trouble getting that first rotation on start. I probably need to replace the decompression solenoid as well. Figured I'd do both at the same time.

Do Dave's wire set before you replace anything else. It'll most likely cure your issue.

Did something happen to Erb, since he's not signed into the forum for 5 months?

I rode out and met Neil a couple few years ago and got his wire set. There was an immediate noticeable difference. I'm glad I put them on.

The explanation isn't 100% right, and one of the "selling points" is a little off. The stock wires are 6 ga, not 8, so the numbers don't jump as much.

But putting the new 4ga wires on does make sense. And there is another benefit that doesn't get as much credit. When people swap wires they end up cleaning ALL of their heavy connections between the battery and starter.

Ain't it the truth.
