Starter issues 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Having starter issue. 2001 Road Star, Started running really ragged, thought I got bad gas. Did general service, Plugs, air filter fuel filter changed gas etc. Started ran fine. Road about 5 miles. Next day wouldn't start. Traced it to starter relay. Replaced Started and ran about another 5 miles. Next day wouldn't start. smoke coming from starter side of starter relay found broken lug on starter cable. ordered replacement Flame Wire starter cable and ground. Tried to start and noticed excess heat and smoke at starter and cables got very hot disconnected battery. Ordered new starter. Replaced. I get nothing. The decompression solenoid clicks but happens. I took new starter off and bench tested it on another battery. The new ones runs fast and seems to have good torque the old one tunes slowly and has little torque. Reinstalled new starter. tried to crank. get nothing but click from decompression solenoid

Did you test your new relay? Maybe it got fried when the cable broke?

I would bypass the relay first. If you know it turns over fine with a cable running directly to the starter you can start back tracking.

And there are multiple connections to check, and they all have to be clean and tight. Don't forget the cable side and the terminal side of all connections.

Also easy for someone keep focusing on positive side after playing with the starter and relay, and miss the ground connections. (I'm thinking four contact points there alone, both ends of the cable and both connection points.)
