JETTING KITS- WHICH ONE? 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hi,

My bike: 1999 Roadstar 1600V
Mods: KN Air intake/Cobra Pipes/Dyna 3000 CDI (stock settings)/ Stock jetting in a Mikuni BR40 carb (pilot 35/ main 165)

Question: What jet kit do I got with? I've looked on partsfish.com and bikebandit.com

The dynojet kit comes with main jets of:
-165, 190, and 195 and an adjustable needle- but does not have a pilot jet upgrade

The Cobra Kit
-comes with 3 main jets (biggest 170) and needle- but again no pilot jet upgrade

Vance and Hines
-5 main jets no pilot jet and needle

Baron
-main jets no pilot jet and needle

I know I need the following part numbers:

-MAIN JET- n100.604.167 and PILOT JET N224.103.37 but where can I get these?

SECOND QUESTION:
My bike ran fine for 2 years with stock jetting. I had it start to stutter like it had bad fuel. (see History below for other recent work done). I got it home, drained the tank, found no contaminants, changed the filter, cleaned the primary and secondary (inline) filters, checked the pump, cleaned the carb out completely and inspected all components, blew all ports out with compressed air- put it back together- idles ok, revs out ok, but has a stutter off idle. It never had this issue before- why now? Both cylinders are running lean equally- running 235F should be 190 correct? Plugs are white. checked the intake and its not cracked (also checked with propane torch while running).

RECENT HISTORY- replaced the following : battery, CDI, Wiring harness, pickup, stator, wires, plugs, coils, pickup coil .. (was a intermittent short in harness). Put 30 hrs son this with no issues prior to the above problem). Also have switched out CDI with two known good ones and no change.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
tim

barons is the favorite one around here so you will find better help with that kit.

your problem sounds similar to a vacuum leak. i know you checked it out but i dont know what else it could be. im to lazy right now to go through that thread. is your ais still hooked up?

No that is deleted and blocked off- I'll go re-check it right now-
If it was a burnt valve I would have consistent backfiring etc, correct? If it was a head gasket I would have only one cylinder affected? Correct? I runs fine except off Idle. I've checked a bunch of websites in search of a new pilot jet and I can't find them anywhere- I'd like to buy a bulk kit - any idea where to order from?

+1 on the Barons Kits. Also pick up a 37.5 pilot jet.

The Barons Kits it avaliable everywhere Ebay, Amazon I think. The Pilot I pickup at my local stealership.

Baron kit ordered on FortNine- be here Aug 8. It didn't include a pilot jet though--- where can I get a kit with various jets to have on hand? Local dealers only have stock, I tried. Bike shops order online when needed- I still can't find the #37.5 or 40 pilot jet I want.

I just told my local Yamaha shop that I needed the 37.5 for a Mikuni Carb. I guess you could do the same online.

Get your jetting right. A 167.5 or 170 Mikuni main, and a 37.5 Mikuni Pilot. Put the PMS 2 3/8 turns out from lightly seated, and leave it alone. Set the idle to 900rpms, when the motor is hot and leave it alone after that. Don't be messing with it when the motor isn't fully warmed up.
I think the Pilot number is N224.103. Google that number and mikuni, and take your pic of suppliers.

Put the clip on the needle in the 4th groove from the blunt end, also.

You can get your pilot jet from jetsrus.com They have all the jets you could ever want for just about any motorcycle carb.

Re:JETTING KITS- WHICH ONE? 5 Months, 4 Weeks ago
Update- I cannot get JetsRus to send me a pilot jet unless I have an american address with an american credit card - I had a friend in the states order me one in- what an ordeal! Still waiting on it-

Just some further feedback- my issue is not jetting. I pulled apart the carb over 10 times on my honeymoon chasing jets as the thread states. I installed the Baron needle on the third setting- and moved it everywhere from the 5th groove as per instruction to the second grove- it likes the third the best. I also played with main jets from 165 - 175 - it likes 172.5 the best.... I continued checking cylinder temps with the heat gun to see if there was a difference- both ran form 230-300 F (FYI liquid cooled is only 190 and it took a while to confirm this is normal for air cooled engines (near the head). I also compared good running bikes to mine when meeting with other bikers and found it was consistent with 300 ish. (History- bike has recently new pickup/cdi/coils/plugs/voltage reg/ stator/ battery and wiring harness). If the issue was compression related I would have temperature differences, and also it would consistently run poorly. The bike would sometimes run perfect, then run on 1 out of two spark plugs on that one cylinder causing it to miss once in awhile- more so at low RPM which explains electrical. I finally replaced the coil for the front cylinder when the front cylinder went dead- and instantly the bike ran perfect for the rest of the day- I clearly have an issue that is shorting out the coil- but what would I check in the wiring harness for this specifically without disassembling the whole wiring harness?
