repeated coil burning up 5 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
I've looked on the web for the answers- have yet not been able to clarify this- how does a stator potentially take out a coil (s)? I would think if it was spiking or overcharging the voltage regulator would correct that. Can someone answer this?
Thanks

Have you actually checked your charging voltage?....it should read around 14.2 volts @2000rpm

First thing I would check is the ground for the coil that burnt up. If it isn't properly grounded - through corrosion or loose mounting - it is much more likely to have electrical issues.

The primary side of the coil is grounded through a wire to the computer. Breaking the ground is what causes the coil to fire.
Having said that, I was told by a Yamaha Rep that the primary wires have to be attached a certain way and to make note of where they are attached before removing the coils. Someone here recently posted how the wires were supposed to be attached.

I want to check in my hole engine ground battery ground and an extra ground to the frame a frame to the motor ground spark has to have someplace to go if it doesn't it will go through things and Destroy them also don't forget the throttle cables where they pass coil they can wear thru insulation and ground out the hot lead. Loose spark plug wires or broke spark plug can fry a coil

Its not super critical which way the wires on the coil go ! it used to mean that the spark would jump from the centre electrode to the ground one, but now with two plugs the spark goes from one centre to the next plug then up the earth to the centre on the other plug, now is the bike running on both cylinders or just one, for the next instalment of uncle Johns diagnoses tune in tomorrow night same bat channel same bat time

That would seem to indicate a series connection. The secondary circuit on our bikes is parallel. Both plugs are fired at the same time from one coil.

the plugs are in serries, corvette used to call it the "cross fire ignition", now when connecting the primary wires onto the coil its a good idea to connect the wire with 12v at it to the outside terminal on the coil ! as I found out late one night that the live wire had moved and touched the coil mount and then I got as it all went pear shaped

Looking at the wiring diagram I still don't see where you come up with series. Our type of coils were used for quite some time on cars with the wasted spark technology ie. 2 coils on a 4 cylinder, 3 on a 6 and so forth. NGK still sells them.
