At witt's end - I think I'm done! 2 Months ago
This POS has kicked my butt to no end. I pulled the manifold for the third time, meticulously cleaned the mating surfaces including surfacing the manifold flanges.

There are no leaks that I can locate. the manifold port is capped.
It will crank and idle smooth, but when you give it the least amount of throttle she bucks, coughs and backfires thru the carb.

Steps I've taken: (not all at once, mind you, but systematically)

Inspected, surfaced and sealed intake manifold.
checked float bowl level and valve/seat.
Cleaned carb and verified jets/ports are clear.
Checked & set accelerator pump.
Replaced ignition coils & plugs & checked for shorting.
Checked TPS signal.
Checked signal from crank/cam sensor to the Dyna.
Checked Exhaust manifolds & replaced gaskets.

Where to go from here?

Replace carb?
Check replace cylinder head gaskets?
Forget it and buy new bike?

There is a plastic piece on the after side of the carb, I think you can see it looking around the back side of the air cleaner, make sure it is not cracked. I forget the symptoms that it gives when it is cracked. Hopefully someone will chime in here that knows more. Don't give up, it's going to end up being something simple.

Taking a shot in the dark here and this may sound way off base but put a battery charger on the bike and see if that makes the popping go away while reving up.

I just looked at your profile page. Your jetting says your Barons needle is on the 3rd Groove. Per Barons instructions it should be in the 4th groove for 1700's and in the 5th Groove for 1600's. There is some leeway there but I think if that your jetting info page is correct, that could be causing your issues.

The item MikeyC mentioned is the Coaster Enricher Cover that is made of plastic and is known to crack. A possibility, maybe, kinda doubtful for your symptoms but worth inspecting.

Coaster enricher cover is good. 3rd groove should be good for the 170 main, but that's an easy check.
Did the battery charger trick a couple of weeks back, no help.
When I get some time I'll pull the tank and try finding the leak point, again. I heard gasoline and a propane torch work good for that.

Hey, Have you done anything that would affect the timing? If that were a small block v-8 I'd say your to far advanced. Just a stab in the dark there. Still probably just a crack or leak in the intake or at the carb to manifold
