2001 Yamaha Road Midnight Star 2 Years, 8 Months ago
First time posting, very excited to be a part of the Road Star community!
I hope you guys have some suggestions to help me out.

Originally I was planning on posting some "before and after" pictures of my bike after installing the Baron Big Air kit and 3" Hard Krome big straights but unfortunately ran into problems.

My bike has been in the shop for over a week and the mechanic is having an issue with getting the bike to stop backfiring. The Baron kit had the necessary replacement jets (they have been installed) and the mechanic also ordered a different size of the pilot jet and installed that (because it was not included), but it is still backfiring.

Bike is a 2001 Midnight Star (1600cc) with 17,000 kms on it. Was running fine before with the stock air filter and a stage 2 stock exhaust mod (drilled into the baffles).

Mechanic has been researching on the net and has not come up with a solution. I was hoping that I could go back to him with some suggestions in case he didn't try all options.

Thank you all in advance for your suggestions. Such a shame that the bike is sitting in the shop during prime riding season. Want to get it out of there! Especially during the short riding season here in Toronto, Canada.

Correct. AIS has been removed for a few years. No issues with running on the stock (stage 2) modded exhaust with stock filter.

Did you replace the stock exhaust gaskets, or reuse the old ones?
Did you revisit the torque on the exhaust flange nuts a few times, after several different rides when the bike was cold?
Is the Coasting Enricher cover cracked?
Is the Oring still on the PMS screw?
Any chance the cap on the intake manifold, the AIS attached to, is craked/missing?
It may be time to remove the intake, surface the flanges, and re install it.
What jetting are they using?
167.5 Mikuni main/37.5 Mikuni pilot/ clip on the 4th groove from the top, and with the spacers/washers stacked same as stock, should work fine.

Did you do the exhaust work yourself? If you did did you reuse your original gaskets or new ones? If you used the original ones I would tell the shop to replace them with new ones and see what happens.

Yes, did the exhaust work myself. Re-used the old exhaust gaskets. That's interesting. Never thought of that.

I will find out the specs on the jets they are using and reply back and also re-search some of the other questions asked by "SKWEARpeg"

I'll post back once I hear back from the mechanic on the specs of the jets used.

Thank you for the replies so far! Finally something to go on.
