My new to me R* 1st ride 1 Year, 9 Months ago
So I got to go and pick my Roadie this morning, right off the bat the engine seemed noisy, like a light clanking, almost like detonation.
I rode for 30 miles to home.
I thought: check the air-filter....it was pretty well stocked with sunflower seeds, and other squirrel delights.
Then I drained out a gallon and a half of at least 1 1/2 year old gas.

Cleaner air filter, fresh gas, back out for a test ride.
Although it ran better, there was still engine noise, hard to describe, like a clatter.

[u]Are these 1700 R* noisy under acceleration?
I was told it never had a valve adjustment, it has 42,000kms, (26,250 miles)

I struggled to get the seat off too, the switch just wasn't un-latching the seat lock at all.
I finally got the cable to move manually by pulling off the console, and used a pick to pull on that cable lever.
I simply scrounged around for another shorter cable in my junk, and now I have a stealth seat release.

I appreciate your opinions on engine noise,
Thanks

Rick

Im not the expert but have always hear Yammy motors are all noisy, mine is. However you have old gas and a bunch of crap in the air cleaner it sounds like you need to run something through the tank and the crank case and clean it out and see what happens.

change the oil...air filter dirty, old gas...I bet the oil is old also and in need of changing

my '08 will get a little noisy when it's time to change, after the change it quiets back down a bit.....but yeah, like derailed said, they are fairly noisy to begin with

How long did you ride it for? It will run rough for the first 15 mins and shake before it warms up good. These are really cold blooded engines and need time to warm up. Dont forget there is 4 liters of oil in this beast and takes a while for it all to warm up. I live in New Brunswick and it happens to me when cold. Change the oil to 10w40 along with some seafoam in your gas. I havent adjusted my valves and have a little over 88000kms.

I road about 30 miles, and it was only 10*c (50*f) at the start, so it was not warm.
After the air filter clean-up & fresh gas I rode again for 15 minutes at 16*c (62*f)
It seemed a little quieter, but still an audible engine clatter under throttle.

What is the idea behind using Seafoam in the fuel?
Thanks

Why the hell did you buy a Roadstar? Didn't we all tell you not to do that?

Many are noisy. My 2008 FI is, but GreenMachine's 2000 produces only exhaust noise. Go figure. Unless you know the exact and recent maintenance history, change the oil to AmsOil or Mobile 1 synthetic for motorcycles, change the transfer case oil, change the 4 plugs, put Seafoam in the 1st tank and MMO in the next and alternate a couple times, drive it fast and hit the rev limiter often.

Shores, I was hoping for a quiet engine with not much more than exhaust noise....
But I will do as you say, and see what happens.

I have a feeling there will be a valve clearance inspection very soon.

The lifters are hydraulic meaning they are self adjusting to a tolerance close to zero to the valve. The bike may just need a good multiple rev limiter hits and long ride. These bikes aren't quite at all. The more you ride it the better it is for it.

These things are normally noisy my guess is the things you hear are normal noises. Also these have hyd lifters and 4 valves per cyl, so the so called valve adjustment is more of a valve synchronization adjustment.

Well, it seems I might just do as ya'll are saying, but I guess the clatter just might be the nature of this 05 R*.

I'll do a tune-up, and get back with this group once I'm done.

Thanks,

Rick
