Yea the rider was wrong! But the cop has a responsibilty to the public not to endanger them. By getting involved in a high speed chase which this was over a speeding violation was not the correct thing to do! If the officer would have backed off and found the guy another day that would of been the correct action. Not trying to offend anyone just saying the police have to be held accountable for their actions just like the rest of us.
So lets say we hadn't read the story as to what happened and play this one out.
Guy breaks into your house and kills your family, he runs a block and steals a bike, cop notices a guy matching the killers description and he just gets the tag number and says "I'll find him another day" the killer then gets away and runs to mexico, grows a beard, shaves his head and is never seen again. Your familys killer got away because the cop DIDN'T do his job.
When someone runs they can't just assume that he did no wrong and get a tag number for another day, and a lot of places have no chopper to follow overhead with. The cop did his job, the biker was a idiot and now we have one less scumbag on the street.
Cops are held accountable but they still have to do their job and as long as they opperate within their policies they are good to go.

Since you want to play what if.

How about if YOU were the one out having fun and had a few too many beers and the same cop popped up behind you. Now instead of doing the smart thing you decide that you can outrun this cop and take off on a high speed chase. Does that mean you deserve to die for it?

Once the guy decided to run, he is responsible for the end results.

As said, these are the consequences of his actions.
The consequences may be overly severe for his actions, but he is still responsible for them.

Using your car is the same as using your weapon as far as the Michigan State Police is concerned (against a person). It's deadly force. I'm assuming many PD's around the country have a similar outlook. Not sure about this particular case obviously (never know the whole story in these deals).

Yep, running is dumb and it puts more people at risk. Every situation is unique. Seems to be questionable if it was done totally on purpose in this case. Pretty sure it's not worth killing someone on purpose for running from the police. You can't assume they just murdered someone's family any more than you can assume someone who just allegedly stole a pack of gum murdered the store clerk. This is America, not some third world police state. We have a constitution and we have due process. It's not always perfect but life should be put above all other priorities. Someone hopped up on adrenaline because of a chase doesn't excuse murder if that someone didn't threaten their life directly.

Police doing their job doesn't include killing someone under suspicious circumstances. Police aren't military. It isn't part of the job description to kill unless lives are in imminent danger. They may have been in this case though. I wasn't there and neither were any of you guys.

Yeah, death penalty by cop. No, he was stupid to run but doing a high speed chase, blowing many red lights trying to get away would endanger a lot more people. Yes, the police need to do their job, but not if doing it is going to risk many more lives in the process. Using a car to purposely take down a biker, in my opinion, is attempted murder. Again, I am not at all justifying what the guy did, he was for sure in the wrong.

What if the cop ran into your young child or grandchild during a high speed chase?

If he had caused an accident they would be screaming that the cops should have stopped him sooner.

Yeah, if you are out having fun, get drunk and get pulled over.....you should stop.

We are talking about an 800# motorcycle, not a 3 ton dually pick up. I still don't think the end justified the means. It was late night not middle of the day. If the biker did collide with a car, the cop was so close he would of been in the wreck also.
