Smoke from battery negative cable. 10 Months ago
Hello,
I 're routed my electrics from above the seat frame to under it (unplug and plug back in,inc ecu and starter relay) so I can fit a bobber seat
The headlights ,signals, brakelights, instruments and horn are all wworking but when starting the bike it turns over but I've got smoke coming from the battery's negative wire where it attaches to the battery terminal ( it's very hot)
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Is it tight? They have a tendency to loosen up, after the bike has been ran a few times. I snug mine anytime the seat is off. I use one of the thin star lock washers, also. They are the light duty ones. Not the split ring lock washers.

Yep. Loose connection is the most likely cause of such a thing

Are you still running the stock wires?
It may be time to check your starter, and make sure its clean and tidy on the inside.
How long are you cranking on the bike to get it to start? Proper starting sequence, proper use of the enricher, a good battery, and mine usually pops of on the second or third stroke. The longer you crank on it, the more the neg cable will get hot.
If you have a meter, check the standing voltage on the battery, after it has sat over night, or for a day or so and see what you have.

I've posted about this before. The cable can be tight but unless the battery terminal is cleaned down to bright metal there will be a lot of resistance there. The underside of the wire terminal also. With 12 volts it only takes a thin layer of oxidation to shut off or reduce current flow.

Had to replace my battery this spring because a loose wire melted the batt terminal. Shit happens

When you rerouted everything, did you make sure nothing was being pinched? Same thing happened to me when I put my transmission in my project car. I pinched the starter wire so it ripped the protective cover and the metal from the wire was touching the metal on the tranny. White smoke, hot battery and no start.

Check to make sure rerouted wires are not pinched between seat and frame or wherever you tucked em
