My very first BROKEN Clutch cable experiance 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago

I'm sure many of you have already had the pleasure of this one.
Was riding to help a fellow RSC member with their bike. As I was just about there, pulled clutch and cable sheared right at the clutch handle.
That has never happened to me before. Kind of a rude awakening. Lucky for me, it was clear in front of me.
Glad it didn't happen in traffic

I have heard this happening more than once on these bikes, I keep mine well oiled and a new spare in my saddlebag.

Glad your ok. Must have been lots of fun downshifting and trying to find neutral while getting off the roadway. Maybe you could describe how you did that successfully and we could all take notes.
Downshifting to neutral as you're slowing the bike is easier than you think. It's just dropping to the next lower gear as the engine approaches idle speed and a little tap into neutral.
Try it.

That is probably a fair statement. My problem was I had just downshifted to first and was navigating a sharp RH turn when it happened, so I was dealing with the sudden turn, bank, hill and stall all at once. To be honest, I never thought to practice for that. The sudden snap of the cable kind of put in in a momentary WTF! situation.

I've shifted without clutching plenty with sport bikes but wasn't sure the R* tranny would cooperate with that, especially when
downshifting. good to know it will. I'll have to try it a few times. thanks
I should have said good to know "for an emergency situation".. It definitely aint no sport bike.

Wow, glad that wasn't worse. That just happened to my son on his Sportster, only his was a clutch issue. He lost clutch in first gear after getting gas and whacked the right footpeg into a pylon trying to control it. Wasn't too happy to find out that the footpeg is only bolted to a white metal cover.

I don't think I will have too much of an issue if it happens in the future, at least at low speed. I really think it was the WTF moment that just caught me off guard.

A good post and I am compelled to carry a spare cable now. Stuff like that can turn nasty real fast.

I was Lucky in that I was there to help Mark (mhwusmc) work on his bike. His was going to be down for at least a few days, so we pulled his clutch cable and got mine running with it. I ordered 2 new cables (one for me and one as a thank you gift for him.)
I was actually going to look to see if I can get a longer "inner cable" to have a small / light repair capability when on the road.
