Choke/Carb issues 4 Years, 10 Months ago
I am at my witts end with this bike. I think I have finnally got my carb adjusted somewhat decent but my issue is the cold start. I pull the choke out and the bike fires right up with ease then then the choke lever imediatly sucks itself back in and the bike bogs down and dies. What would cause my choke to turn itself off. This bike is my daily driver and all I have and it is coughing and studering all the way to work( only three miles) because the darn choke won't stay on. I'm not even 100% sure the carb is adjusted ok.

Adj. Knob on the back of the choke.... turn it clockwise to tighten tension on The choke.

Edit...the round piece right behind the knob. It turns.

If it wasn't doing it before you pulled the carb, you most likely have the choke cable routed improperly. If there's a pinch in the cable, it will pull itself back in.
But I was unaware that there was an adjustment like BR is talking about too, so you may want to try that before you yank the carb back off.

Can it really be that simple? I turned the knob and even though I didn't feel any tension as in tightening, it seems to have worked. I guess I will know for sure in the morning. As for removeing the carb, I haven't gotten that far yet. I was hopping not to have to do that. All I have been doing is getting the PMS dialed in correctly per instructions on here. It seams to be lean because it is poping out the intake occationally at slow take offs. It does fine if I all out get on it. My next hurdle to tackel is the accelarator pump adjustment. Carbs are defenately not my favorite thing to work on. I just can't afford to be down long enough to put it into the shop.

They loosen up over time. 99 % guarantee it's fixed.

Yep, that plastic nut behind is the key.

I had to remove the rubber covering due to the age of my bike and the rubber deteriorating. Works like a charm now.

Re:Choke/Carb issues 6 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I am having a very similar issue with my 02 Midnight. In the last week or two, I have noticed that when I come to a stop sign or am low on rpms in what ever gear, that the bike will run real rough and stall. Like in the original post, if I pull the choke/enricher, it will suck it back in.

I have put some Seafoam in and it is a little better. Trying to run the tank down real low and put new gas wondering if it could have been bad batch of gas.

Runs smooth and strong as long as it isn't low rpm.

I have about 1/4 tank of gas left.

I checked the nut behind the knob and its tight, can't budge it with fingers.

Any other ideas or will I have to pull the carb and clean the pilot screw holes?

Thanks for any help you can give,

Steve

If your having to cheat with the Enricher when the bike is warmed up, then more then likely you're experiencing a vacuum leak.

If it's just not staying out on a cold start. Or when you push it half way in when the bike still needs some enrichment to run properly, then you need to turn the tension nut a little more in the clockwise direction.
This is not the plastic hex nut on the backside of the bracket, that holds the Enricher in the bracket. It's inside the rubber donut the knob almost touches when the Enricher knob is in all the way.

Also. Make sure the bikes idle is set to 900rpms.

Put about 8 ounces of Seafoam in a fresh tank of gas, and see how it does. Even more then that, won't hurt.

The RPM was set to about 900 maybe a little bit more. it is all the time at low RPM not just on cold start. I will put in more Seafoam once I can get this gas gone.

Thank you,

Steve
