QQ: Drive Belt Life 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Quick questions about drive belt life. My 2000 RS seems to have an original belt. Not sure on the exact mileage as the speedo was replaced, but I'm guess somewhere in the high 20K miles range.

What kind of life expectancy can I get from this belt?

Age? Or miles? Which is the determining factor?

Any signs that it's going to fail or does it just go all at once?

Any belt dressing to improve life?

TIA,

Dan

Keep it and the pulleys clean with soap and water and forget about it. Some have gotten more than 100K.

I had a belt to fail in the low 20's, but I'd bought the bike from a guy who lived on a dirt road, and it had picked up a small stone, and punched it thru the middle of the belt. I used that belt for 4 years, until the beginning of the '15 season, when I rolled it out for the first time to ride... and it just broke and fell right off in the driveway!

They're tough.

Inspect it closely, if it doesn't look weak anywhere, it's probably still good to go!

I'll just add 1 thing to the above post, don't remove the belt guard. It is there for a reason like protecting and keeping those stones and other thing away from the belt.

Yea, I know you're right, but I like the 'appearance' of showing off the belt drive system... totally a personal preference, and I ride the champagne-colored bike with no guards, and removed the lower guard off the red & white.

The rat bobber will have no guards too.

I guess I like living life on the edge!

I had the same question, 8k on my 2001 Midnight and was wondering if they had an expected shelf life (like aged tires).

Good to hear. I was considering a 'take the safe route' replacement until I saw the $300 price tag on a new belt!

I was also wondering about gearing, if we could change a pulley to tweak the gearing a bit (I'm an old racer; changing sprockets is typical). But it's not like we can add or take a few links out of the belt to adjust the final drive.

Does anyone make aftermarket pulleys?

There is a lot of info on this subject in the forum search.

Riding style also plays a roll in longevity. If you like to make hard starts it can put more stress on the belt. I had one let go when I pegged the limiter off the line. Went to grab second and bang! It had about 50k miles on it.

If you ever remove the belt DO NOT BEND IT! That's the worst thing for belts. The small fibers inside will break and significantly shorten the lifespan.

As far as visual inspection, look for small cracks, especially at the base of the teeth and in between the ribs. Also look for missing teeth, teeth with gouges or chunks missing, and of course, any holes from stones and other debris.
