Very good tips. Have most of these kinks been worked out on newer EFI bikes, or grandfathered in?

1. The 99 - 03 R* have a transmission recall out. It is a safety recall and Yamaha will repair the problem at no cost you. A cir-clip in the trans can come loose and lock the trans up. The engine has to be torn down to fix it. Contact any dealer local to you and give them the VIN number and they can check the database and tell you if the recall has been done. If it hasn't been done then have them do it. You don't have to be the original owner. Any question just open a new thread and we will give you more information.

Actually, call Yamaha directly. For parallel or grey imports, your local dealers will NOT have the information on hand and for these bikes Yamaha never contacted the owners - even if they were the original owners! I called a local dealer a couple of weeks ago (shortly after reading about this issue) and was told it was all done.
Today I called Yamaha UK and was told the recall hasn't been done yet for this bike. (I'm in the UK, bike was originally for Finland(?!), but was sold new and first registered here in the UK).

The UK number for Yamaha is 01932 358000. Give them the VIN, they can look it up, and give you a list of local dealers.
What Number can we call in the USA ??Anyone Know ?

I took my new to me 2002 Road* in today to the dealer to have tires mounted and while there I asked about the
transmission recall and the service manager said he would check it out. When I returned he said that my bike didn't show up as having a recall so there was nothing he could do. I thought I remember reading on here that ALL of the 1600's were included. Can anyone tell me for sure? I don't really need it done as the bike runs great but i'd like to know that if I decide to have it done that it is available. Thanks
