Re:Front Brake Maint.: HELP 6 Years, 8 Months ago
Question:

My front brake feels like there is no "fluid" compression when I press down. I can still get braking action, but it is not smooth like it should be.

I checked fluid levels and I'm full. I also cleaned the brakes according to the instructions on this post (which were very helpful I might add). I have not yet drained and refilled the lines.

Any ideas as to what could be causing my problem??

Thanks!

take the brake handle off. be careful of the spring that ya don't lose it. Look in the Master cylinder where the handle hits the plunger, see the rubber boot, with a small screwdriver, moved it a bit and get the straw from a wd40 in there and give it a squirt.

Glad someone bumped this.

Had an '85 Kawasaki ZN700 that I changed front pads on. I tried to bleed 'em afterwards. Had the resevoir cap off, opened the bleeder valve and gave it a pump. Brake fluid all over. No matter what I did, every time I pumped the brake fluid came out at the top of the resevoir.

From what you're saying, this should not happen?

Did you have the system open for any reason? Did you change a brake line or try to bleed the brakes, Have the calipers apart?

Thanks for the suggestions. I took the lever apart and cleaned and regreased the pivot. That solved the problem! I'm back on track now.

Glad to see people getting use out of my post. Greyphart, glad to see your well enough to be thinking brakes. I should have talked with you more at the greet, I wont pass it up next chance. Hope all is well and your bike recovers at the same speed you do.

In another topic related area. Don't overfill the brak resivor, you have to see some air in the view glass, if not, it won't allow the brakes to completely release, and that will wear them out fast and jack up your MPG.

Check the fluid level, as the pads wear, the level lowers. I usually add some, but, when it comes time to put new pads on, have to remove some fluid. I just stick a clean rag in reservoir and soak some up then toss the rag. Also, I don't recommend the synthetic brake fluid, I tried it, brakes never felt good, I picked up a Mity-vac and replaced with straight DOT 4, made a huge difference
