Tachometer help 1 Week, 6 Days ago
I've put a faring on my 04 R* and am looking at gauges for it.
At the moment I have found a matching Speedometer and tach. They are both white faced and the speedo is a GPS unit so there are no issues there.
My question is concerning the tach. I found it on ebay and the description says "Universal For All Engine If Engine has RPM Signal Out. Just Setting The Speed Rate To Fits All Vehicle Engine. We only send item to US." I don't know where to get an RPM signal, unless they are talking about from a coil. And I don't know what they are talking about speed rate.
I really and pretty good at this stuff but it like I'm trying to interpret a foreign language or something.
Can anyone help me here or maybe someone has a tach and speedo you can suggest?
Thanks for your help
Kent

The signal comes from the coil and speed rate is likey that it has a switch for use on 2,4,6 or 8 cylinder motors. Make sure they are waterproof before buying. I know Warden bought some for fairing mount that were sealed. I think they were from Speedhut.

The tach needs to be for a twin fire ignition.

Harley uses the same setup on the newer bikes.

Meaning the coil fires the plugs every revolution of the crank.

So I just have to put the tach input wire to one of the coils? Does it matter which coil? Which wire on the coil do I connect to the tach?
Thanks

I'm not positive but I think that on a tach that is adjustable for 2,4,6 and 8 cylinder engines he would just have to set it to the 4 cylinder engine setting.

Either coil and you attach the signal wire to the negative terminal.

the signal comes from the neg side of the coil. whatever coil is easier to get to the neg side but don't matter other than that

Rodger that. All the mini tachs I’ve mounted on
Yamaha v-twins have been of the dual fire variety.

The switch I’ve seen on some were to read the signal

from either 2 stroke or 4 stroke engines.
