I'm not sure that is your problem. Once you release the starter button there is no connection between your starter and battery. So a shorted wire in the starter shouldn't be the problem.

Tho a starter pulls a lot of amps when cranking, a dead short in the brushes would be enough to spot weld the large contacts in the starter relay and continue to draw hard on the battery.

Enough to melt shit fast. Surprised there wasn’t a peculiar smell going on.

It’s not making any sense as to what was going on.

If the large contacts in the relay welded together the starter would be cranking over continuously and would melt the battery cables right before the fire.
