I know what ur going to saw, However! 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
My bike cranks and starts up as long as temp is in the 70,s up, when it drops below 60's it cranks until battery too weak.
new starter, starter wire,Battery, decompression solenoid working good, but according to roadstar manual, the relay on the right side of the seat area checks bad, second one I've bought on ebay, So why does it start all day in warm weather or even when it sits for eight hours? If starter switch clicks, I turn on-off switch back on and press start button, then it also sometimes start. any ideas will stimulate me in possible right direction.

Make sure the idle is set to about 900rpms, on a hot bike, and then leave it alone.
Pull the Enricher all the way out(make sure it stays out).
Push the start button.

Don’ t twist the throttle. Leave it alone.

The bike should start with a faster smooth idle. Don’t touch the throttle.
After 5 or 10 seconds, the motor will begin a richer lumpy idle. As soon as that starts, ease the Enricher in until it smooths out. The Enricher should still be out about halfway. Leave it like that. Don’t mess with the throttle, until you’re ready to ride off. Don’t push the Enricher all the way in, until the bike responds well enough to the throttle to accelerate off idle and not die.

As far as the starting relay under the “left” side cover, try and only use the OEM relays. The cheaper ones have a bad rep here on the Forum.
Make sure all your battery connections are tight.

Is that what you thought we’d saw?

Thank you for responding!

Well, I thought all would say , replace the relay, but does the relay have anything to do with the outside Temperature?
and why does it start with a bad relay.

If the relay is going bad, it’ll cause an intermittent start problem. Sometimes even if it won’t work, you can remove it and tap it on the ground, and get it to work. If you think it is the relay, then you can jump the two big lugs on the relay so the battery is connected right to the starter. Just make sure the bike is in neutral if you try it.

If it is slow turning over, check to make sure the battery is charging properly and is charged. If the battery is fine, then the Starter may need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Start with the easy fixes first.

Sounds more to me like the enricher/choke circuit isn't working correctly. I say when it don't want to start go ahead and twist the throttle a couple times to see if it fires or at least tries to fire. Then we can go from there.

OK, SKWEARpeg, I bettter check starter relay, but I know the relay on the right side don't check out, but it always crank, hot or cold, it just won't start when weather is cold, just cranks until it runs the battery down.

Ok, Davej, I did replace the spring in the choke enricher, but maybe it isn't setting in place correctly, will check that.
I cleaned the carb and put new fuel filter. warm weather it cranks and starts right up all day long, but on a cold morn I put a trikle charger on the battery to give it a boast.

I'll keep playing with it guys and let U know what the out come is. Thanks

Check the voltage on the battery at rest when you finish riding at the end of the day.
Check the voltage after a day or so at rest before you try and start it.
When you try and start it, check the voltage, and see if there is a significant difference when you put the starter load on it.

I have a year old 270ca battery from Sears that I had to add the acid to, and it hasn’t been run in over a month. It’ll pop right off if I go outside right now and try it. No trickle charger at all. I’ve let it sit for several months without problems.
I’ve used several of the AZ ready to go 310ca batteries, and have decided I don’t care much for them.

I will add, if it is the starter solenoid, the battery will be fine, and the most you’ll get when you push the start button may be a click or nothing.

I’m thinking the battery may be on its way out, or as Dave mentioned a fuel delivery problem. You can get the motor to fire by twisting the throttle a few times while trying to start the bike, but when you do, you end the vacuum behind the throttle plate that makes the Enricher work.

So it sounds like it always cranks, but doesn't want to fire when the weather is cold? In other words, when it's warm it turns over one or two times and starts, but when it's cold it cranks more than 5 or 10 times and the battery dies. Sound about right? That definitely sounds like it's not choked properly to me.

Two very good points Guys, I do notice a slight decline in voltage the longer it sits and the cold would really hurt. On the next expected cold morning, I will dis-connect it and leave the battery on trickle charge. and I will check that that choke.

Thanks Guys

I'm thinking follow Dave's advice on the carb.

It should not have to crank much to start. If everything is right it should only take a few turns.

I believe you are chasing the wrong problem with the electrical.
