Speedo Question 3 Months ago
Looking at a short money 2003 RS. Gonna need a little elbow grease and minor work to get it back to it's former self, but for the money it will be worth it.

The speedo doesn't work right any more. Only some of the numbers show up on the odometer. I will find another one easily enough but am wondering where the actual mileage is stored. Is it in the speedo unit itself or somewhere else. Hoping it is somewhere else so I don't have to guess how many "real" miles are on the bike.

Sorry, it's in the speedo.

It CAN be reset by an authorised dealer with the correct equipment (and changed if you buy a used one.) If I remember correctly, it was $75 to have one programmed.

When I bought a new one (it was NOS) it started at zero.

I always find myself wondering about the truth of "99 R* with only 3600 miles." I have put 9K on mine since i bought it in 2016.

and I don't even do "long haul rides" yet. I think my longest single trip was about 110 miles.

By the way... The "display portion" of the speedo is ONLY a display. it can be replaced if you can find one, and that would let you read the odo.

Sorry for high jacking the thread, BUT...where can you get a replacement lcd screen? I was having a problem with the uv filter covering mine. It was wrinkled up on the edges and looked like crap so when I had the cluster apart to put the little rubber covers over the pins so the speedo and fuel needles wouldn't stick, i went ahead and pulled that film off. Replaced the uv film with some clear film from an auto tint shop. Problem was, I couldn't see the numbers. So, I opened the cluster back up and took the new film off. Now I can barely see the display but only from an angle in low light. Aghhh! My bike is for sale with under 7500 miles on it so I'd like for the lcd to be brighter. (I've owned her for 12 years and bought it with 3300 miles on it. So mine really is one of those bikes with very low miles on it.) If I can get a replacement screen for it reasonably I would like to.

I don't think you CAN buy a new display, unless you can find what company made the Speedo for Yamaha. I tried for quite a while before going the new speedo route. I could not find any numbers I could trace back (ckt board, display, Yamaha.) The display is a generic LCD and is nothing special (other than possibly size) that I can tell.

It is a carbon contact display. The two carbon impregnated rubber standoff's conduct power and signals to the display. Try cleaning the ckt board contacts, both ends of the standoff's and the bottom of the LCD with isopropyl alchohol. Let them dry and put back together. Make sure you do not touch any of the cleaned contact points with your fingers or the natural oils will cause a problem. Press down firmly.

So does the lcd display just pull off? Then press back on after cleaning all contacts with alcohol? I don't get why it became so faint after I pulled the uv film off.

Re:Speedo Question 3 Months ago
There is a "frame" around the LCD display. You have to straighten the 4 corners underneath the ckt board and lift off the frame.
then you can lift of the other parts.

While there is no way for me to know for sure, it sounds like you tried the "window tint" without removing the frame first. If thats the case, you may have just gotten water seepage between the bottom of the LCD and the connectors.

Yeah the original film was curling up on the edges so I removed as much as I could and cleaned it with alcohol. Then I applied the new film over the lcd. I thought it may have been making the numbers hard to see so I opened it back up and removed the new uv film. Right now I don't have any film over the lcd but it's still hard to see.

Ohhh. I just reread your post and you are exactly right. I did try to put the uv film on without remove the lcd from its frame. So if I can remove the lcd from the frame then I can clean the contacts with alcohol and then reconnect? Should I use dielectric grease on the connections? I know next to nothing about electronics

Yes, pull and clean with isopropyl alcohol, let completely dry, then re assemble. Cover with Film and let it dry prior to cleaning if you want to use the film. "Dielectric Grease" is an insulator (meaning it is designed to BLOCK the conduction of electricity. Dielectric grease should NEVER be used on an electrical connection. Many people get confused on that issue (especially on spark plugs.) It's good to use dielectric grease as a lubricant (spark plug boot to porcelain, or between connectors) as long as it is not BETWEEN actual electrical connections. DG is also a good way to block low pressure liquids from seeping into the connection. There is a product called "Electro-lube" that is great to use on actual electrical connections (as it does conduct) but you have to be very careful how it is applied to prevent shorting.
