installing a wideband A/F gauge. 4 Years, 4 Months ago
I was asked to start a thread on installing a wideband onto the road star. I will show how i installed it onto my bike and pipes, you install process will likely differ based on pipes and gauge placement. I originally installed my gauge as a way to jet my bike without multiple trips to a dyno and i have found this to be a great tool to have.

I have found there is multiple ways to get the same answer as far as jetting goes and there isnt a one size fits all based on what i see on my gauge in real world driving. But the best part is you can tune your carb for "your driving speed" afterall it makes no sence to tune for mikuni's 65mph figure in the manual if you like to drive at 75-80 or 85-90 right?

So here is what i did to install it. Davej was the first i know of to run one but you want a INNOVATE MTX-L wideband, its about $150

It a water resistant gauge and has bright enough leds to see even in daylight but not overpowering at night.

Install is very simple. Switched power and ground hookup is all you need for power. On the back of the gauge you will see two short plugs for a data logger forget those are there. Then a clump of 5 thin loose wires. You only need 3of those. On is power one is ground and one is the dimmer wire. Hook it up so its at full bright all the time.

Onto the hard part of the job, the o2 sensor. I was lucky to be able to drill out the 8mm o2 bung on my freedom header to the 18mm x 1.5 thread needed for the o2 sensor and thread it on in and was done. If you are not that lucky innovate was kind enough to include a 1" tall bung you can have welded onto your header (any muffler shop can do this as well) There is a wire that goes from the sensor to the gauge that simply plugs in. And thats all there is too the install. Just make sure to calobrate the sensor before using (simple instructions in the manual and take one minute to do)

If you install the gauge in a harley fairing its a tight fit but works. The lower holes next to the radio work better but i wanted it in the top holes and had to sand the sides of the bezel down so i could slide it into the fairing only because the bezle is wider than the countersunk hole.

Im sorry but i dont have a pic of the back of the gauge. I like my idle at 13.5 and my cruise speeds at 15. 15 is pretty lean for a air cooled bike so i might drop it down to average the perfect mix of 14.7.

13.5 is max tq/power
14.7 is a perfect mix where all the gas and air is used up
15.4 is max economy but is hard on a air cooled motor.

Good stuff Smokes. I appreciate you doing this.

This is what Garage Days are for. A group of us should meet and do all our bikes at one time.

Front jug and the o2 is between the back of the frame and transfer case. But it can be placed up at the jug as well. Just try to avoid a bended spot as air turbulance can throw off the reading

I kind of hesitate to mention this, somebody might hit me upside the head with a rotten apple, but if you intend to measure each cylinder, you will need 2 of the 1 inch bungs..that is if you have twin pipes.

Just a reminder that a person might want to order an additional bung at the same time, and do them both at the same time.

Yeah...I know its obvious..back to my morning coffee.
