PLEASE HELP - Light wiring Problem FIXED 10 Years ago
Cobra Light Bar Install on a 2006 Midnight Roadie

Have it physically on, and running into 2 problems.

1 - cant find a live wire, even the blue to the flashers..Blinkers are working fine, but cant get a live to run to the passing bulbs. Ran a test light on the blue, no light. Ran on the blinkers Green, and Brown, and switche on, and the passing bulbs blink as they should. So there mounted correctly, but cants find a live wire. INstallation says the blue wire to the flashers, but no go.

2- My Headlight fuse keeps blowing..cant figure out why except that the headligt is not on, dont know if thats a problem, but with the fuse in, soon as I turn the ignition, it blows.. Didnt do anything to the headlight, except remove it..
PLease help, Greatly appreciated..

Thanks
John

Finally Got It..Thanks so much for these great replies..
I disconnected both signals put in a new fuse and all worked..
When I connected the left signal, it blew the fuse..

I pulled apart the signal, and inside where the bulb is, the blue wire had a hairline crack, which rubbed on the new Cobra Lightbar mount..not on the oem

stripped it , soldered a better connection, and heat wrapped it, and better than new...no more fuses blown..

THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE HELPED RESPONDED..AT LEAST NOW I LEARNED HOW TO REBUILD THE FLASHERS, IF ANYONE HAS ANY QUESTIONS..

Thanks again.

John

You have a short somewhere on the blue wire start from the head light disconect the head light and check for voltage with a new fuse in. You may have pinched the blue wire some where along the way. Keep working you way back from the head light along the blue wire disconecting things as you go until you find voltage. Then when you fin voltage the short is some where between where you found it and the next connection. Some one else my have a better idea.

Re:PLEASE HELP - Light wiring Problem 10 Years ago
Well would the flashers still work wouldnt that fuse blow especioally as less amp?

also I checked the blue wire and it looks ok, no frayed, I cant even put a fuse in and turn the key without the headlight fuse blowing immediatley. The blue line, cant be connected to the headlight because when the headlight fuse blew, the flashers still work.

..so if anything connected to them, was shorting, then the flasher fuse would blow no?

The yellow and green run from the headlight to your dimmer switch.
the Blue comes from your turn signals to the headlight fuse.
The brown to the turn signal switch.
The green from the head light also runs to your meter assembly and the turn signal switch
Do you have the meter assembly unplugged for some reason? that will
interupt the flow to the headlight.

Jump in here wiring sperts,I'm getting myself confused

Re:PLEASE HELP - Light wiring Problem 10 Years ago
sounds like either the yellow or the green headlight wire is shorting out to ground....when you turn on the ignition...and this blows the headlight fuse...

since the blue wire that powers the "running lights"( in the front turn signal lamps and tailight) is hooked to the headlamp fuse then you would have no power on the blue after the fuse blows...

this has nothin to do with the signal wiring...(dark green and brown wires)which run to your turn signals from the turn signal switch

check the headlamp yellow and the green ..make sure they are not pinched... cause they go to the dimmer switch then on a red/yellow back to the headlamp fuse...(you didnt touch the dimmer switch???)

Re:PLEASE HELP - Light wiring Problem 10 Years ago
OK I Think Im making headway.. I disconnected the flashers, and te headligt fuse does not blow..

and I have juice to the blue line..

I removed the flasher bulb, and the headlight fuse does not blow..
either flasher bulb in causes the headlight to blow..

so I have come to the conclusion that the bulb is incorrect, for the flasher, since when the bulb is out the wires are not grounding to cause the headlight to blow.

I may be wrong, but I have an 06 with the amber bulbs, and I noticed others witht he ligt bar like yours, have amber reflectors, cannot be a less drawing bulb??

Re:PLEASE HELP - Light wiring Problem 10 Years ago
so we may be discovering the short is at the bulb??

make sure the bulb is in there properly...it is a weird three pin bulb...

nothing to do with current draw...but check to see if the bulb has three pins one hi and two offset low..and that the pins.. are in the proper slots...and the bulb is turned in properly...

maybe one of the bulbs is shorting

cause if the power from the socket touches the bulb base it would cause the fuse to blow then no power to the blue wiring..

I have the same sockets...just changed the clear lenses to amber and the amber bulb to clear (a filed 1157) cus I wanted the older look...

2 fuses are involved. 1 for headlight; also is tail light, front running lights, and dash light. Other is turn signals, stop light, horn, & neutral light.

Therefore the turn signals work when the headlight doesn't. Turn signal wires are dark green & chocolate. Running light wire is blue. Headlight wires are green & yellow. Passing lights are usually hooked to the headlight to either the high or low beam.

If your passing lights are halogen and you have 50 amp H3 bulbs or if they are 50 amp sealed beams that is your problem.

My own bike has had all of the turn signal-running and tail-stop bulbs replaced with LED types to reduce the load. The passing lights have been hooked up with a relay and there own fuse. The relay gets its power from the headlight but the power for the passing lights goes directly from the battery through its own inline fuse.

Clifford has a good point about the passing lamps.... but my understanding from your post is ... the headlamp fuse is blowing when you turn on the ignition .....and you havent hooked up the passing lamps...to the blue wire ... cause no power ...but they work on the brown or green signal light wires...

and you are trying to hook up the cobra passing lamp bar which uses the stock turn signals...

and then you found everything works when you removed the signal light bulbs...

Re:PLEASE HELP - Light wiring Problem 10 Years ago
not to get too confused but I know on the 06 that the passing lights do not power up til the bike is running or at least been started, some kind of relay. keeps mine off but if I start the bike and shut it down with the kill switch they stay on.. blue wire only to passing lights not connected to headlights... but I have not looked at any other wiring diagrams.. my 06 silverado came with the lights and if you change out the module with a dyna you have to by pass the relay and power it up directly from some other source..
