Final attempt or she is gone. 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Good morning all. As stated ,quite some time ago,I have never had such a love /hate relationship w/ a motorcycle as I have had w/ my Roadstar. From running to suspension, ride feel issues, I have just about had my fill. I parked the bike over a year ago because I had just had enough. Issues w/ running and cornering the machine that were hit and miss trying to diagnose, I had reached my limit. Well, I am in the process of building a Trike for my dad ,whose health has been diminishing, has caused me to drag mine out of mothballs for a final attempt to correct the issues or she goes. My father and I have both ridden for years but have never had the opportunity to ride together. (Kinda odd I know) I am trying to get them together so we can. I am replacing both the front neck bearings and the front wheel bearings in the hope that the "riding on ice " feeling in curves gets better. I am also trying ,for the final time, to correct the rear cylinder carbonizing issues. I average MAYBE 100-125 miles before the rear plugs are completely fouled. I have tried repeatedly jetting / adjusting the factory carb to no avail. I am considering the HSR42/45 to replace the factory unit but am unsure ,not only which is the best choice, but also which part number actually fits the Roadstar. I have found many different part numbers for both carbs. I am running dynateck coils and a dynatek ign module, k&N filter and full length shot gun exhaust.I am also running pumpless w/ a ported intake. AIS has also been deleted. I would GREATLY appreciate any help that you could offer. Thank you

I'm no expert but the first thing that came to me was weak spark or low compression and from what I've read here a lot of squirrely ride issues are from the rear wheel not aligned properly.

I had a lot of those same feelings. I always felt like the rear end of the bike was coming out from underneath me, and that the front end wanted to dance around, couldnt keep a straight line. It was a combination of a few things.

#1 rear tire alignment. There are threads on here for how to build a wheel alignment gauge. Put one together and make sure that wheel is true.

#2 Fork alignment. If your forks have been apart, there is a chance that when the tubes were put back in the trees, they might not have been seated 100% identical. When you do the fork neck bearings, make sure those front forks are 100% level with each other.

#4 tire pressures. I have michelin commander 2's front and back. These tires are SO picky about air pressure. Its crazy. 1 lb high or low and the ride characteristics completely change. I have to run exactly 38 front and 40 rear or else it feels like im riding on a skating rink.

It's very possible you are chasing after mixture issues with sticking valves that have not been corrected yet. What year is the bike? What needle is in it? What groove is the clip in? What size and brand main jet is in it? What size and brand pilot jet is in it? What air box is on the bike? Is the PMS screw uncovered? Is there an O-ring in the PMS screw stack? How many miles are on the bike? Do you have a picture of the exhaust? Does the exhaust have baffles installed? Are you sure the rear shock is not blown out on the bike? Do you know how to tell? What tires are on the bike? How old are they? What pressure are you running in them? Do you check them at least once a week?

Your profile and your post seem to suggest the carb is still as stock jetting wise, other then you've messed with the jetting. Correct? After trying repeatedly with the jetting, where are you?

What Main and Pilot are you running, and are they Mikuni jets? Is it still the stock one groove needle? What's under the clip?
How many turns out on the PMS?
What is the hot idle set at on the bike? Set it hot, and then don't mess with it. Should be around 900rpms. If it has a potato potato Harley lope sound, it's to low.
Have you checked the float level on the carb using the Yamaha method of the tube on the bowl drain? Bike upright. 4mm above the carb to bowl mating surface, checked on the manifold side of the carb, not the air cleaner side?
Is the enricher closing all the way, when you push it in? Have you tried trimmimng the back of the knob to make sure it's not touching?
Are you sure you got the manifold sealed well when you R&R'd it for the porting?
Is the air filter clean?
Is the crankcase vent running into the back of the aircleaner, or have you diverted it elsewhere, with a small filter of some sort on the end?

What air pressure do you run in your tires, and what brand and how old are the tires? Are you still running the stock spring and damper on the rear?
Step up to at least a 10w oil in the forks(Stock is 5w I think), when you put it back together, unless your running Progressive or Race tech, and then follow their directions.

I just looked at your profile and you have an 04, so I believe you have SVS as your primary problem with your rear cylinder fouling.
Also, a Barons ported manifold is more of a de burr than an actual port, but that's not where your trouble lies.

As something simple to look at as a possibility I ran a Dunlop 404 on the rear and always felt like I was riding on ice. The best improvement ever on my 04 was getting rid of that tire.

I have attempted to address the possibility of a SVS issue repeatedly. I have fogged the carb w/ everything from BG induction cleaner to Yamalube, Valvetek , Mercury carbon remover and seafoam. I also run some type of additive, usually Yamalube w/ every fill up.

I love roadstars but with your experience you had I would get rid of it and never look back you're never going to be comfortable with it and you're always going to be thinking something is going to go wrong. They are great bikes when all stock and you do all the work to it but if you buy one and it's been fiddled with by somebody else you never know what you're getting. If you want a great bike start with a bone-stock one and do the stuff to it you want done. But at this point honestly I would change and get a totally different bike to enjoy riding again
