Fender Repair 1 Year, 9 Months ago
Hey folks, for the paint and body folks out here. How hard do you think it would be to fix this rear fender up? Its just the tip that has this booboo on it, rest of the fender is in good shape. Don't care about saving the paint at all, whole bike is going to be repainted.

There are three ways of doing things. The right way, the wrong way, and then there is the Norwegian way.

Buy a VERY cheap hammer and dolly set from Harbor Freight. Not the best set in the world but it will work great for what you are looking at.

The MAJOR trick is DO NOT RUSH the reshaping. Work very slowly with light hammer taps against the dolly. You aren't trying for metallic perfection, just get it as close as possible, then use body glaze to finish it off. If you feel you need body PUTTY, the keep working with the hammer and dolly until you don't. Damage at the edge will reappear quickly if you use putty / filler to fix it.

There are plenty of "how to" you tubes on body damage. You should be able to get there without too much trouble.

Good luck

Oh no, I'm not doing it myself. Im going to take the tins to a professional and have them do the bodywork and paint. Im swapping the rear on my 99 for the newer style (really like the teardrop taillight) and all I need is the fender. Just making sure that a competent paint and body person could work with this fender without a huge amount of work.

That looks like a easy fix for a professional to do.

The painter shouldn't even charge you for that small spot. If he does he is an asshole. I'm sure he is getting enough for the rest of the paint job to cover the 10 minutes it will take to fix that.

Ok, went ahead and bought the fender. $107 with shipping. Can at least get my tail light and flashers going until I can get the bike in for paint. Hope to do that over the hot months here.

Doesn't look like more than an hour worth of work for any body shop.

Touch up the paint so it doesn't rust then put a chrome tip on it.

That's right Norske...that's why there are so many airplane junkyards here because nothing rusts. I remember when I lived in Texas, one of our pastimes there was sitting out on the porch on a quiet evening listening to our bikes rust.
