gas mileage getting worse 4 Months, 4 Weeks ago
Just wanted to ask for some advise on what to look into. I have a 2001 midnight and I have just replaced the stator and rectifier recently. About 2 months ago I noticed I wasn't getting as much out of my tank on my daily commute to work. I started tracking my mileage and it went from 43 mpg to around 33 mpg. This seemed to happen slowly over the 2 months as mileage kept going down. I tried trimming my choke knob to ensure it seats right. Checked for intake leaks as I had replace the manifold about a year and half ago. Running a can of Sea-foam thru 3 tanks of gas to see if it changes anything. Well anyway any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How do you 'home make' a K&N filter?

Just means that your having more fun riding it. I was getting high 40s when I ride with a group and mid to high 30s when I ride alone, now I have adjusted my riding alone riding style and I get better mileage.

I went to the auto store and found a small K&N auto filter and cut it in half. I took my old paper filter and tore off the paper element. I had to trim a little bit of the plastic lip off where the paper element was attached. The K&N must be a small one. I do not remember the part number. I then took 3m marine adhesive and glued the half K&N filter onto the plastic from which the paper element use to reside. let dry for 24 and you have an "Homemade K&N Filter". I found this idea on this forum somewhere years and years ago. Thanks again Forums.

Why do that when you can buy one made specifically for your bike? Is your enricher (choke you call it) all the way in once the bike is warmed up? You should not use it to make the engine run well when warm. It needs to be all the way in.

Replace the needle and seat with a new OEM set. More then likely, the oring seal on the seat has started leaking. Don't try to make one out of stuff in the junk drawer.

Thanks SKWEARpeg for the advise on the needle. That makes sense since the mileage went down over time. Sounds like gradual decay to me.

To answer Shores question they only had BAC's when I bought this 2001 new. $150 for the BAC plus costs for a re-jet kit. I think the K&N I bought was $25. Plus the 3m goop I think $3.50 way cheaper and I am still using it till this day. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

It'll go from a gradual "hmmmm my mileage is falling off", to a more pronounced "Holy cow, the thing's flooding and won't even run.
