headlight dim then bright, dim then bright at idle 6 Months ago
rode for 20 mins then pulled in my garage.. was about to shut off then noticed headlight went dim (not off) for few secs then normal for few secs then dim for seconds then normal again...
I didn't get off the bike to look at tail light to see if it did the same (darn it.

Another thing is dash light does kinda flicker when it was idling--not on,off but dim, bright really fast-- seems like dash has always done that though.

bike is a 2000 and 55K miles. original stator/rectifier, etc. does this sound at all related to stator and/or rectifier?

How begin the troubleshooting? I shut it off and turned key back on and when not running it didn't do this.

Could be a bad battery. It causes strange things to happen.

Do you have your idle set real low? What happens if you bring the RPM up just a tad when sitting there? Does it stop the flicker of the light?

Need a volt meter and start at the battery.

Check for fluctuations in the readings there and also check the stator three wire plug for anomalies.

Then fan out and check other connections.

A running engine will vibrate wiring and connections and make iffie connections wig out.

I second checking connections especially ground ones. I found one barely making connection once inside the headlight shell.

I would check the battery neg. & positive connections first. Generally a dimming light is caused from poor ground!

Re:headlight dim then bright, dim then bright at idle 5 Months, 4 Weeks ago
thanks for the responses.
the battery terminals were snug but not tight so tightened more but still same.

I have the grip ace digital switches module and the control module is about the size of a candy bar.
When I switched to smaller headlight recently I had to relocate all the stuff in stock headlight to under tank.

I wrapped the module in rubber tape and put foil tape on bottom and put it between frame top tube and coils. I also wrapped coils in rubber tape.

while trying to figure out where the dim/bright/dim/bright headlight issue was originating I moved each wire and relays and finally moved grip ace module from it's location. Well that fixed the headlight issue. It was only occurring when the bike was running so I guess the interference from the coils was messin with the module.

so I wrapped model in a thick piece of shrink wrap then put aluminum foil around like a baked potato and put back above coils. It hasn't had an issue since.

I like when things get fixed without any costs.
