I'm thinking the "hit" doesn't have to be a collision, perhaps even a really nasty pot hole.

Exactly. A good sized pot hole, especially if the torque is low on the axle, as tension enhances lateral strength as well. Banging it into a curb also comes to mind.

the PO owned it in Hotlanta GA, do they have potholes there?, cuz we dont have em in FL. requires water under road and freeze thaw cycles, we only have SINKHOLES. !!!!!!!!!!!

Atlanta has shifty red clay soil. They can wallow out a hole you can hide a muleIin. Then, there's curbs too.

I know this is an old thread but I'm thinking you have to think like race bike if you got shimmy at speed it may be you're set up to tight rear shock too tight too much preload in the front end too heavy fork oil perhaps a tad too much air pressure if your front end is too tight it's going to deflect off everything small bumps in the road a slight lateral win wind
