Ask Dave about his motor build. A little something he did, just cuz

Without the desire to make something your own, or improve on what's there to start with, there'd be no aftermarket.
Removing the fuel pump is on the same path as dumping the AIS, changing exhaust, installing a new intake, rejetting the carb, changing the front springs, installing a heavier rear spring or Roadwing, a 21 inch front wheel, choosing a seat of your own liking. The list goes on.

My wife made me do the motor build. I didn't want to do it. The motor build did accomplish something, More power. Ais removal stop decel backfire. After market exhaust makes it louder and often adds power. Those mod actually change something pump removal don't really do anything. In many cases it starts a series of issues as in now venting the cap usually after having an issue of some sort. Then alot of guys mess with the float and never get it right again. You know you have helped a bunch try to correct issues after pump removal.

If a guy wants to do a mod just cause thats alright. I just think it's funny to make excuses to do it.

I've been stranded on the road in the middle of nowhere. A victim of technology and better ideas. When I saw that people on here were getting rid of the little engineering wonders, it was all the excuse I needed.

When I joined the forum, Odo was already old news. The simplicity of his thinking regarding setting the float, was art.

Well, I did make it clear... I just wanted to exposed the appearance of those gorgeous jugs as much as possible!

When I learned it was possible to run the fuel line over the manifold, I did that, too, and for the very same reason.

I'm actually wanting to move that electrical thingie that hangs out in the air in front of the motor to somewhere else, too. I just haven't given enough thot as to where yet... I see my bikes, and I just want to get on them and ride... not tinker some more!

Also, fwiw, I did one several hours long stint, one night in '11 from up in Maine, back to my home, at 75 and 80, on I95. For the first few moments, I was curious as to whether I would get enough fuel (and I've always run a 31 tooth, too), and I made myself a record-time trip without one hiccup. That said to me I had it right... for at least that much steady speed cruisin'. Perhaps, if I'd started to push for more, say a steady 85, I might have found some fuel starvation by then, but we just don't do such things up here, where all those danged libs live together in their multi-state-wide "communes".

If you are thinking of moving the reg/rec be careful where you move it. It also needs air across it to help keep it cool. If you move it to an enclosed area it may overheat and mess it up. If you don't like the look of it they make a nice "slotted" chrome cover for it. Remember anything with fins on it needs air to cool. The fins are there for heat dissipation.

Dave, I absolutely know what you're sayin'!

My present idea is to maybe try to flip it. Reverse the mount in such a way as to turn the whole thing up 180 degrees, so as to get it as high up the frame as possible, so as to still catch plenty of air, but open up that space down lower, where it presently resides, for a better view of those two gorgeous jugs!

My only real problem with tinkerin' like that, is that I have no tools or training to cut and reweld the mount in such a fashion as to attempt my mod. I think I can "see" what it is that I would like to do, but no means of actually accomplishing it.

I've read of others, in the past, that rerouted the wiring, and relocated totally out of sight, but I don't recall where... but, I could be imagining that, too..........

Don't try to compress the photos. Just dump them into PhotoBucket. Then copy the IMG link on the right side bar when you click on one of the photos in PB and paste it here.
