Valve cover gaskets? 11 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
I adjusted my valves last year (yes one needed it) and reused the gaskets. I can't get the rear one to stop leaking slightly. I have new gaskets to install. They are metal of sorts.
Do I put them in dry or is there something I can put on them to ensure a good seal and future removal?

The service manual states to assemble, just reverse the removal procedure.
Does mention something about installing a new gasket.

I think they go in dry but I used some " Roll Royce " gasket goo , its blue in colour and it does not set hard so its easy to remove again, a little goes a long way, I think Loctite make a similar product, hope this helps, John no need to buy new gaskets

I would think a metal shim style gasket would go in dry. I know that the ones I reused were put in dry.

I always install dry. If you want to use some sort of sealant (which shouldn't be needed) try something like a thin coat of the Hylomar that some use on their intake manifold. Don't use any type of RTV.

I always just wiped a thin coat of oil on them. Main thing is not to over torque the bolts trying to stop the leak. That will strip the aluminum head/spacer. Been there, done that...

No goop! Why do people always want to goop on a bunch of goop where goop don't need to be gooped? If you would have replaced with a new gaskets in the first place (like you know you should have) you wouldn't have this issue to begin with, now would you? You know what goop is good for? I'll tell you. Goop is good for squishing out inside the motor, breaking off, and finding it's way to the oil pump, where, consequently, it locks up the oil pump and grenades the motor. So yea, go ahead, goop it up, goop it up real good and see what that gets you. ![](https://wayback.archive-it.org/10073/20180225081200im_/http://roadstarclinic.com/components/com_fireboard/template/rsc5/images/english/emoticons/angry.png)

A thin coat of oil is a good idea. Snug all the bolts and then go around and tighten them to the final torque - 7.2 ft lbs.

Thanks Scott. That's what I did last time but I tried to reuse the gaskets. Got new ones now to install.

I would convert that to inch lbs and use a 1/4 drive inch lbs tq wrench
