Is a salvage title doable? 3 Months ago
|
|
I found a good deal on a local salvage title bike for cheap and wondered how hard this would be to insure? I have never done a salvage anything so I have no idea what I am doing with this one. It is a "totaled" bike but the insurance company did the estimate and the bike is not structurally damaged at all. So it would pass a DMV inspection. So anyone got any words of advice?

What year and how much?
Clear titles are a pain to get and liability insurance is probably all they’ll write for it.

If you are planning to keep the bike and ride it until it dies then it can be a good deal. Insurance and registration isn't that big a deal.
If you planning on flipping it, forget it. There's no real resale value. You will most likely have more in to it than you will get back.

I already have two other R*s so this is definitely a ride till it dies bike. It's so cheap I am not sure I can pass it up. It would be the other other bike. You know the one my wife did not know I was going to buy and then there it is.

It will not be hard to insure with liability insurance. I can usually find liability ins for about $7-10 a month. It's probably not worth insuring with full coverage anyway. It may be a bike you could play with, mess with, and ride, keeping the miles and depreciation off your other scooters. That alone should equate to some dollars over the years along with it being a sellable bike later for maybe even a little bit more than you paid for it.
But as they say.... without pics it ain't a real bike!

A buddy of mine buys slightly damaged cars and trucks that have salvage titles. Never has a problem selling them. I bought a sweet little CRX from him and had no prob getting the required insurance. Motorcycles should be the same?

I would check the requirements with your state DMV. Some, California for instance, require a paid inspection by a certified mechanic / tech that frames and suspension parts are acceptable and that all safety systems (I would guess just brakes, lights, signals on a MC) are functional. I did it one time on an SUV and it was only $125 to have it inspected. No idea what they would charge for a bike.

My insurance totaled mine and let me keep the original title and i bought it back for $300 and had to put less than 1k back into it. They said because of the age they didn't have to do a salvage title. It's an 04. And they also insured it the same as before. It turned out pretty good.

WEll damn it I missed out on the bike due to a sale price $500 over what was willing to go for it. Crap the parts alone were well worth the price paid for the salvage price but I am short on "bike" funds. Funny thing was I showed what I was doing to the wife after the fact and she oddly didn't bat an eye at the story. I may have to pursue another one in the future with that response. Got my bagger, a solo ape hanger, and now what else is there? Power cruiser? Chop? I am not sure
