If you can afford it go Barnett. I added the EBC spring and still have some slipping. 08 1700 / stock.

I have an EBC spring on my workbench. You’re scarin me boy! Really, still slips? Why? Can I leave the original in an just add the EBC to it. Seems I’ve heard of folks doing that.

I would leave the EBC on the workbench or hang it on the wall for a conversation piece. Call it "the one I didn't install twice" clutch spring. Get a Barrnett and do it 1 time without concern about future issues. don't dbl up the springs it is only asking for trouble, especially with the clutch cable.

I felt a Barnett on a friend’s bike and didn’t like the squeeze required to operate the clutch lever. I’m not a big or strong person. I thought the EBC springs were slightly stronger than the stock spring and that most folks who have installed them liked them. Did I miss something?

No Steve you didn't miss anything. the EBC is an improvement over stock definitely, BUT only about 10% more holding strength due to the ebc spring gauge is only like .006" thicker that stock. Now that's not a lot more holding help, so I tend to agree with dave that if you can afford and pull a Barnett clutch without a problem it's the best way to go for sure.

But to ease your concerns I have also heard many reports that EBC springs have fixed the clutch slippage, so it is probably worth a try in your case since you aren't in favor of the squeeze required on the Barnett. For all I know I'm one of the few where the ebc did not fully fix the issue. It may take care of your slippage just fine so give it a try first.

As said the EBC is about 10% better than stock. Many stock springs (including mine) start slipping at 10K-15K so expect an extra 1K-1.5K miles from it. I think those that have posted that it fixed their issue posted right after they installed it and their issue was fixed at the time. I have seen a few post about the longevity of the EBC and from what I have read it isn't that good. I guess if you ride real easy and never have fun on the throttle it may do OK for you for a little while, if you don't ride many miles in a year like a couple thousand a year it may even last a few years. At 2K a year it may last 5 or more years.

So maybe for those who don’t want the stiff Barnett should just consider installing a stock one.
Bummer I already bought an EBC.

EBC might be cheaper to purchase than a stock Yamaha spring. Did your friends have have the optional heavy duty springs on the Barrnett? I put the heavy springs on mine and it isn't bad at all. after the first ride you don't even realize the difference in the pull.

had same issues , fitted an EBC spring and was ok for about 1K miles then slipping again on hard accel . Fitted Barnett clutch and plates , no problem since . 5k miles ago and 70K on motor now. not a lot of difference on lever pull

Re:Clutch slipping, again..... 3 Months ago
From my experience, I bought my bike used with no history so I opted to get the stock Yamaha clutch kit (cheap on eBay from a Honda dealership). It came with spring, all discs and all plates and clip and gasket. I also ordered the ebc spring at the same time. I noticed my clutch started slipping on hard accel in 5th gear only, and then 4th also started to slip. Only under full throttle did it ever slip, and it only slipped when the windshield was on. I bought everything because I only wanted to do it once and didn't know of the previous history. I installed the new plates and discs (old ones measured just fine and are saved in a ziplock bag of bike oil laying flat on my shelf). I installed the ebc spring at the same time and everything functioned perfect (I did have a leak and had to remove cover and apply some silicone to the gasket). I have now done 15000km since the replacement and I feel the slip at 5k. Perform my oil change and it is perfect again. My bike does run a little rich I assume due to the fuel smell. I think in my situation I am running so rich I get some fuel in my oil and after 5k it's diluted enough to cause slippage.

Yep, I get on the throttle pretty good sometimes so it slips... and who wants to be in a safety situation where you have to power hard in high gear only to find your motor spin but you don't move? Had that happen once when I was trying to pass slow traffic and had to pull over and change my shorts afterwards. Yamaha really missed it on the clutch. They should have done a recall... imo it's a safety hazard.

I have stated many times on this forum that with the Barnett it is "Set it and forget it" It costs more up front however it is a ONE TIME JOB. With the stock spring or even the EBC at any given time you could get stuck in a traffic jam or whatever else that could potentially overheat the spring due to excessive clutch use and cause it to start flattening, which is what causes the slippage. The Barnett is NOT the same thing; it actually uses REAL COIL SPRINGS pressing against a fixed plate that press against the friction plates to apply the holding pressure that keeps the plates from slipping under power conditions. Unfortunately even though the EBC is cheaper and better, it is only marginally better than stock and my opinion is that it will only last marginally longer than a stock one.

Have not heard of one person having issues with a Barnett slipping even long after installation.

just my 1/2 pennies worth,

Rod

I agree completely. One of the first things I did when I first was playing with my 2000 was the Barnett clutch And wider levers with the Barnett cable. The ONLY time she’s ever slipped I needed to adjust the freeplay. Highly recommend frequent lubricaton on the cable and clean the ferell end at the lever with quality grease to avoid binding. Those two simple items will negate cable binding & breakage so significantly and result in regular adjustments leading to unnecessary slippage. IMHO well worth it for the long run.
