Hard to start 6 Years, 4 Months ago
Ok my friends, here's what I got. After my bike sits for a week or so (due to the hours I work, is why this happens), it is very hard to start and even harder if the temp is below 60 degrees. It cranks and cranks until the battery sometimes wears down and I have to re-charge it. I've even tried giving it just a small blip of the throttle and it then seems like its flooded. Any help as always is greatly appreciated!

Turn the throttle open all the way and crank it. I bet that will start it.

I just went thru that same issue. Check the the fuel pump is working and have a clean fuel filter, also check the decompression solenoid, check the gap between the little rod of the solenoid and spoon(the spoon bends easy), see if the rod is extending out all the way when you press the start button. if is not then pull it back with your finger as you press the start button. the soleniod is my problem but at $189 for a new one I can live with soleniod cover off .

My bike has turned real "cold blodded" since I put the HSR42 on. It takes a little cranking and playing with the choke & throttle to fire it cold. I have it running on the lean side which is causing this to happen. It would fire right up with the stock carb with very little choke, But it was jetted way to rich as I just followed the instructions in the jet kit which were wrong for my bike.
I will richen it up a tad in next couple of days and see what happens

Thanks a ton! I will try the decompression solenoid suggestion. Do you know how I can check to see if the fuel pump is working properly?

You will here it running. As the pressure builds you will here the pump slow down till it turns off

my bike used to start by just tapping the start. but lately it has been really hard to start, like yours. jetting and choke have no effect. I still have not figured it out.

Re:Hard to start 6 Years, 4 Months ago
Many years ago I had a Virago 750 that was difficult to start in cooler weather (I lived in LA...Lower Alabama at the time, so we aren't talking about freezing temps). I would wear the battery down trying to start it. What I found with it was that if I changed to a lower viscosity oil in the 'winter', I wouldn't have the problem. I hated doing it, felt I lost protection, but it kept me from getting stranded at work or in town.

Don't know that would help with your problem, just throwing it out there.

The '99 has a very small hole in the starter jet. If it were to clog then I would think it would be very hard to start cold. Mine starts right up even down to 25, cranks a little slow at that temperature but starts.

You stated that it seems flooded. Is there a lot of black smoke when it finally starts? The accelerator pump at the stock setting shoots a pretty good stream of gas.
