Crankcase bolt identification help, please. 5 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hello fellow RoadStar-aholics! I'm new to this, so I took my best guess on which category to post in. I couldn't figure out how to get the picture in the post, but I think the link is there to follow.
Could someone please tell me what the socket head bolt, that the arrow is pointing to, is holding onto inside the crankcase? I'm getting a little oil weeping out of it, and I'd like to know if it's safe to remove to replace/renew the sealing washer that I think I see under the head of the bolt.

Thank you. I think I did a little better on my second attempt, though I'm very unsure about how I got the photo in there.
Thanks again, and thanks to any/all that respond.

I think that is the oil tank drain plug, should be a 17mm. Let some others chime in to make sure. and

Thanks MikeyC
That's not the oil tank (middle drive). That's the crankcase. (note oil filter, oil lines, floorboard mounts, etc.) This is (I think) about a 6mm socket head that is lined up right under the timing chest, on the right side of the motor.

My bike has a thick copper sealing washer under that bolt which is common for oil drain ports... but I couldn't find a mention of it in the manual.

If it were me sir, I would drain the oil and with the bike on the kickstand remove the bolt and either replace the washer with a new copper washer, or check it for damage and clean all the surfaces and put it back on real tight.
It's often helpful to lap both sides of the washer in a figure 8 pattern on some 400 sandpaper until it shows fully lapped, and that restores a good sealing surface.

good luck

Hello Peter

I'm almost sure that this bolt is sealing the oil line to the right crank shaft bearing. This line is the first bearing after leaving the oil filter.
The bolt is visible in the oil route chart in the service manual. A major leak here is a major problem for the motor. -But it's easy to fix the problem.

Any other ideas?

+1 Same thing in my Service manual. Oil passages have to sealed somehow after they're drilled.

Isn't that the same hole, some people have used to install an oil pressure gauge?

No, that bolt is further back under the lines that go up to the tank. Near the bleed off that carries unfiltered oil to the transmission and clutch.
