Re:Firing on one cylinder 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I do have a small benchtop drill press. Hadn't thought about using that but I'm not sure it's strong enough. I don't have an old push rod, this is the first time I've ever done something like this. I just pulled one of the lifters out and tried it, maybe I need to try the others. I could always take it back if it happens to be just one bad one. Would a wooden dowel rod about the same size as the push rod work? I have one of those. It doesn't have the ball end but I could drill a channel up into it from the end and then a hole through the dowel and the channel so liquid could flow through...

Just set it into a bowl with the atf or whatever oilyou are gonna use to pump them up. Use one of the bike pushrods and push the plunger a few times until it pumps up and don't move. Very easy thing to do. in fact do them now and leave them soak in the oil bowl until you are ready to install them. Don't let your mind make more of it than it is. It really is just that simple. I usually cut the bottom from a milk jug clean/dry it real good and use it for doing the lifters then use the remaining oil to put into the engine when done. I also let the lifters soak in the oil bath overnight if possible

Will do, thanks. I tend to overthink things a bit I looked at the lifters this morning and they're fine. I can push them down with my finger without too much problem. Long story but short version is I was pushing down on the case rather than the center. Now that I understand how these work, I see it's no problem. Thanks for the help...... and the patience

Still waiting on my parts but it looks like they should get her Friday.

Quick question: when reassembling everything is it a good idea to use Blue Loctite on everything or just go ahead and torque to specs and forget it?

I wouldn't use loctite on any case fastener. You might need to get it off again someday.

Nothing to it.

I know it's a joke but using Red Loctite you would need that or a torch. Blue Loctite is strictly for vibration resistance and busts loose easily with normal hand tools.

Refer to the service manual. If bolts require Loctite (blue) there will be a little squirt can emblem next to the bolt in the diagram with the letters LT in the center. The meanings for the different indicators can be found in front of the service manual.

And make sure the fasteners are clean and dry. Oiling them can cause an over torque situation. Probably why so many rear axles were stripped.

I wouldn't use red Loctite anywhere on the bike.
