A lot of good replies here. Just an FYI, this dog came out between two cars hauling ass, and got in front of me before I knew what was going on. I was even accelerating out of a corner. This was not his first rodeo for sure. I think I'll try the air horn for now.

At least until I get my CCP. I am going to go through there next week and explain the Iowa laws on a dog attacking human or animal. In Iowa it is legal to shoot them when showing aggression or attacking a man or animal. It is even legal to shoot them if they are running round with no collar.

I do not want to shoot a dog, but it is nice to know you have the right to protect you or someone else if need be. Thanks everyone for your input. A lot to consider.

Had to laugh when I read this. I am 6'4" with long legs. Can't count the number of times my boot has made solid contact with a dog coming after me on the bike. They don't realize how long my reach is until they get the sh-t kicked out of them. It is very satisfying to hear that yelp of pain after a solid hit. And coincidentally, I wear a 12 Wide.

Gangland style shooting...... with BB guns!!

This probably won't work for your situation, but when I was a kid it did the trick. And it's kind of a funny story. Let me explain... When I was 12 we moved to the country where people let their dogs run free and houses were far and few between. And as kids, we rode our bikes everywhere. Well, between my house and my best friend's house was a house with a golden retriever that would chase us every time we rode by. No matter the time of day, that damn dog would come charging out at us and chase us. One day we'd finally had enough!!! My older brother, who could drive, was home so we devised a plan. I would ride by the house with the dog while my brother and a few of my friends followed behind in the Chrysler New Yorker, armed with BB guns. Sure enough the dog started chasing me!! And just before it hit the road my brother and buddies jumped out of the car and opened up with the BB guns!!! That dog never chased us again!!!

In The Wind,
Aaron

And in case you're wondering, there was no serious or long-term damage done to the dog....

Send a video of you whacking anything with the hose, and post the speed.. An axe handle or what ever. I'd like to see it. Or is this something you think is a good idea? LOL... You cannot disable a chase animal on a motorcycle. You cannot kick in the doors of a person that cuts you off while moving! Any more fantasy's you have? There are old bikers, and stupid bikers... there are NO old stupid bikers. Ride safe, use the hose in the garden.

The only action against drivers that I've ever been successful at was when a SUV pulled into me in the left lane. I was able to brake and avoid the fool, but then sped up, moved to the right lane, and then backhanded the outside rear-view mirror into the door (they fold up like that for car washes and such).THAT sure got the idiots attention!

On the motorcycle I will keep speed low and gun it just before he gets to you, works every time. The boot works well also. If I'm walking with the wife and our dog I would use the .40 or the .380 depending on what I was carrying at the time. That's assuming she wasn't faster then me with her 9mm.

Re:What is you best Dog Repellant???? 3 Years, 3 Months ago
I used to do in home sales for a major bartending school in Atlanta. I always carried two defensive weapons. A small 38 Special Magnesium Lightweight revolver and a 7 inch switch blade that I bought in a flea market in Italy. I sometimes had to go into questionable black neighborhoods so it was prudent to take precautions. Never felt the need to pull the revolver but I pulled the switchblade numerous times when dogs challenged me when walking up to the house. I was young then with quick reflexes, full of "piss & vinegar" and spoiling for a fight and an excuse to use the knife on a dog bent on doing me harm. The dogs much to their credit seemed to recognize my uncowed body language and the knife as a threat to their continuing good health and usually backed off from striking distance when the knife was pointed in their direction. On one occasion, the dogs owner was sitting on the porch of the house next door to the one I was approaching when her dog came after me. I pulled the knife, flicked out the long blade, pointed it in a threatening manner towards the dog, when the owner stood up from her chair and started yelling something at me. Couldn't make out what she was saying but I told her in as loud a voice as I could muster to to travel across two yards; "Don't worry yourself ma'am, if that dog tries to bite me I will drive this pig sticker clear through his skull and avoid getting hurt. Well....her bleating got much louder after that and I could tell from the shrill tone of her voice and her wild gesticulations that she cared more about the dog than me but the dog never did try to attack me after that and I made it up the porch without incident. One of the reasons I never pulled the gun was because if I did fire it I would have a LOT of explaining to do and would be tied up in police red tape for quite awhile even though I had a CCP and I was totally within my rights to protect myself from vicious dogs including shooting one dead in a suburban neighborhood.
