Ignition Switch; Possible Relocation 1 Year, 3 Months ago
After 11 years the ignition switch on the Road Star has crapped out. Turned the key to "On" and nothing. Just a dead bike. Did about an hour or two's worth of troubleshooting which lead me to the ignition switch. Pulled it apart (after getting it off the bike) and found that the plastic disc that the contacts (from the wiring harness) are mounted in had broke, which wasn't allowing the key to fully turn to the "On" position. The contacts were still in place in the disc, so being the cheap/thrifty SOB that I am, I epoxied the disc back together. Put everything back together, feeling pretty proud of myself, only to find out that while it works, it will only make intermittent contact. Turned the key (everything worked like it should), hit the starter button and the bike fired up. But just sitting at an idle it looses all power and dies. If I keep pressure on the key it maintains contact but as soon as I let it go the bike dies. So I guess the contacts are just worn out and it's time for a new ignition switch. Which brings me here.

I remembered from a few years ago there was talk on the forum of relocating the ignition switch. So I did a search but basically came up empty. I found a couple of threads regarding the subject, but there weren't any definitive answers. And a couple of people posted links to pictures, but the links weren't any good.

So short of buying an OEM ignition switch, does anyone know of a 4-wire ignition switch that will work on the '04 and newer 1700 Road Stars. The way the switch is configured is that of the 4 wires/terminals at the plug, they are in pairs, and both pairs are normally open. But when you turn the key to "On", the contacts close and there is continuity between one pair and continuity between the other pair. I thought I'd found a switch that would work, but the description said that one pair of contacts is normally open and that the other pair is normally closed. Any ideas???

Thanks,
In The Wind!!

Oh and i did a relocate. All you need is a 2 wire. Two of the wires are a ground and the stock switch breaks both the grounds and power.
