The Flip: Lower your Roadstar the Fatbike way... 13 Years, 8 Months ago
This thread discusses the Content article: The Flip: Lower your Roadstar the Fatbike way...

Won't grinding the relay arm as suggested in this article reduce the strength of the relay arm?

I think to be frank it does, but not enough to effect actual usage. The dogbones that it attaches to are considerably thinner, and they hold up real well.

This questions has been asked a lot in other places over the years, so I am glad you asked it here.

Folks have been using this method for many years now, and no failures to report yet. The remaining material after the grind is still very stout, and in excess of what it needs to maintain its integrity.

If your looking for alternatives, you might want to consider extended dogbones. Same cosmetic effect, different method. Difference is you will have to buy the extended dogbones as apposed to this method which costs $0.

Also, the dogbones maintain the geometrical configuration Yamaha intended, so it rides a little nicer.

Mine has been "flipped" using the process outlined in this article for a long time now. It rides stiffer than a stock bike would, but other than that I have not noticed a difference. Having it lowered does seem to make it handle a little better in a corner too.

Awsome bike and I want to trick my 2003 Midnite the same ways. Rakeing, streching and lengthening the gas tank might be beyond my abilities though.
I'm handy but am I that handy? Can you direct me to a online clinic on these things? The more basic things I can manage like flip lowering or geegaw bolting on stuff. Cuting a frame or tank melting is going to take me another leval over the tinkerer. I will be back here and through out this site to hunt for my answers. Thanks alot to all of you here!

Hey BlackStar

We don't have any articles yet on raking frames or stretching tanks, but we have been promised some and expect to see them real soon.

Send me an email (through any of the 'Contact Us' links on this site) and I might be able to help get you to some answers.

In my opinion, anytime you remove metal from a object you are weakening it. Has anybody had a problem after doing so? Not that we have heard. Personally, I would change the dogbones to lower the back of the bike. PCS makes a set that will lower 1 3/4".

I was at Riva Yamaha in Florida a few days ago and there was a brand new Road Star on the showroom floor, but the rear end was lowered on it. I asked the salesman if the rear was lowered, and he said, "Yeah, we just flipped the bone around."

Obviously, if one of the nations largest dealers does it to new units still on the showroom floor and sells them that way, it's probably not a dangerous thing to do.

I did mine last night and while all went smoothly, getting the bone itself out of there to grind is a pain in the rear. You can't actually remove the middle bolt. You just have to essentially pry the dogbone out of there!

Both dogbones are made identical. You cannot flip them end to end as they are made differently on each end. Swapping from side to side would not do anything either. Unless you change the length of the dogbone or change/modify the relay arm, the bike will remain at the same heigth.

I bought a 99 already lowered. Cool as hell to look at but I have to slow way down in the corners because the floorboard or the exhaust pipe drags easily. I have a 30" inseam and I sit flatfooted on the ground.

WELL I FLIPED MINE TOO....I DID IT BY TAKING OUT THE SHOCK ASSMBLY... YOU CAN REALLY SEE WHERE TO REMOVE THE MATERIAL THIS WAY BECAUSE YOU CAN EASLY TRIAL FIT BEFORE PUTTING BACK IN THE BIKE....I TOOK OFF JUST ENOUGH TO CLEAR THE SHOCK REALLY NOT THAT MUCH....LITTLE OVER 3" DROP...THE WHOLE PROCESS LESS THAN AN HOUR...NO PROBLEMS
