So 6 is a half dozen of the other.

I've had an aluminum 31t on my bike forever and it is still in great shape..probably has 35k on it and I suspect it will go another 35k at least...

I've got an Aluminum one sitting on the shelf that I picked up for $5 that I'm thinking of tossing on. Is there enough slot left for Belt adjustment to absorb the difference of the smaller front Sprocket or do I need to change the Belt when I do it. That might be the deal breaker right there.

Each tooth you add or drop is a difference of 14mm, so depending on where your axle sits in the adjustment range and the number of teeth on your current front pulley should answer this for you.

When I did mine there was still about 1/4 inch of adjustment left if need be.

I eventually did replace the belt with a smaller one and it's back to were it should be. I say, throw it on, just keep an eye on the adjustments and you'll be good.

Food for thought.

Re:31 tooth pulley 1 Year, 9 Months ago
I live in Northern California, where I'm surrounded in all directions by some of the best, and twistiest mountain roads you'll find anywhere. However, I also have to ride in some of the crappiest, most congested, 8 lane black tops to get to those mountains. So I have pretty good mix of both and I can tell you, I *LOVE* the 31 tooth in the mountains and in town; it's how the R* SHOULD have been geared.

The only time I notice it's an issue... and that's a *small* issue... is when cruising in 5th at 70 MPH + on the freeway. Occasionally, it feels like the bike could use another gear; but it by no means limits my ride. Every so often I find myself checking, just to confirm I'm not in 4th, but I'm already in 5th, so I continue on no problems. A lot of guys think a big twin doesn't like to be revved very high, and in the case of HDs that's pretty much true, but the R* is a Yamaha and it happily revs up to red line all day long. Though you won't be hitting red line on the freeway.

I'd rather have it like this than go back to the stock 33 that made 5th useless below 60 MPH. What does bother me is the speedo. But that can be solved with a "Speed Healer" which you can buy and attach to your bike to correct the problem.

I'd go with the 31 tooth pulley and like Jason said, get a *steel* one, not aluminum. There's a reason why there are cheap aluminum 31 tooth pulleys out there.

Let us know how it turns out...

Cheers,

Doc-V
