Runnin rich, trouble starting, low fuel mileage?? 4 Years, 6 Months ago
2000 road star 1600 silverado...bike has v&h exhaust and k&n filter, was told it had been rejetted for the exhaust and filter was added afterwards. I have to give the bike alil gas to start whether its warm or cold and have gas smoke every time, obviously this issue causes me to have terrible fuel mileage. I can't afford $200+ to have the carb adjusted/cleaned...is there a simple fix other than re jetting the carb?

I think I'd maybe change out the needle and seat, and see if that will help. The bike's 13 years old, it's probably do anyway. It sounds like it's not shutting the fuel off properly. If the electric fuel pump is still in place, replace the needle and seat with the stock item. If anything, the filter and the exhaust would make it run a bit leaner not richer(depending on what is in there now).

If you do this yourself, then you can check the jetting while your in there.

Have you tried running a cleaner through it like Seafoam or ring free? Is the smoke white or black? If you put your hand behind the pipes can you smell unburnt gas, is ther any fluid coming out the pipes? MY initial thought is that you have some serious carbon buildup in the heads and exhaust systems, seafoam should loosen that up and blow it out the back. Ring free is a bit heavier duty but you have to change oil after running through your tank. Seafoam runs about $6 a can at your local auto parts store. Add 1/3 of a can to a full tank of gas and then ride it till it's empty. See if that loosens anything up and or blows some of that carbon build up out of your heads and exhaust.

You might want to check the plastic coasting enricher cover on the side of your carb (#37 on the carb parts diagram). These will crack with age and will result in an over-rich mixture all the time.
