Lossed oil, dripped back towards rear back caliper 3 Years, 6 Months ago
Puked oil from the top back right corner of the oil tank. I have to thank Sarg2196 for providing the picture to indicate where the oil came from

When I removed the right side cover and the relay and flasher packs I could see that the top back right corner of the oil tank was wet with oil and it had run down and flowed back along the swingarm to come to rest on the rear brake caliper and it had slung off the rear tire on to the inner fender. I realized something was wrong when the rear brake felt non-existant.

Anyone else experienced oil coming froom this area? The bolts are all tight and the oil pipe fittings are tight as well. The oil appears to originate from the cap with the side hole (orange arrow indicates the cap) situated between the two bolts on the top of the oil tank just behind the bottom oil line. Sarg2196 mentions in a thread that he too had seen oil coming from this area, but other riders got hung up on suggesting that the transfer case was over filled. But this leak is engine oil and has nothing to do with the transfer case. Any help would be greatful.

Don't know what to tell you. The item indicated in the picture is the vent for the transfer case, if oil is coming out of it then the transfer case is probably overfilled. You said it is engine oil, how do you know it's not gear oil?

If your sure it's not gear oil(smells different then motor oil. It stinks), then make sure the fill spout is snug, on the oil tank, and the bolts on the perimeter of the oil tank are snug as well.

If you just want to be sure it's not gear oil, have somebody hold the bike upright, or put it on a lift, and remove the check plug right below the large slotted chrome fill cap, on the transfer case cover. If oil drains out of that hole, then let it drain until it stops. 'If' oil pours out there, when it stops, put the plug back in. 'If' oil drains out of that hole, and it doesn't smell like gear oil, then drain the whole transfer case, and refill with the proper gear oil.

It's not Hypoid gear oil because it doesn't smell of sulphur and the viscosity is way less than 80. The cap under discussion is in the oil tank top directly above the strainer as the engine oil enters the feed line to the oil pump. Besides the oil tank top gasket runs completely along the outer edge of the top and if there was a channel that lead up to this cap there would be an oil ring to prevent the hypoid mixing with the engine oil if it did back up the 4" channel to puke out the relief valve.

Did that already, the gear oil is at its proper level, just to the bottom edge of the small screw hole below the silver dollar sized gear oil filler.

There is a gasket, that seals around the small hole coming up out of the transfer case by the looks of it. The bolt on either side of the breather the arrow is pointing to tighten down, and prevent the mixing, ***it looks like******. I've not had it apart, just going off the pics in the manual. I don't have a pic of the bottom of the oil tank lid, just the inside of the tank.
The only way to get motor oil out of that breather would be for the gasket to have been breached, but I would think you'd have way to much oil in the transfer case then.
Is it possible, that the oil was over filled in the motor? Maybe spilled when the oil was changed last? Is the allen bolt where the neg ground attaches, that holds the neck in place loose, or the oring around the base of the neck damaged....ie, is is possible it's leaking above, and running down?
Just tossing stuff out here.

Not sure if this helps, but when I bought my bike last month, we test rode it and then once the papers were all signed, I noticed oil leaking down the side of the transfer case.
Jed started cussing his crew thinking they had over filled the bike during prep.

we checked everything, cleaned her up and I rode towards home. During our final fuel stop I noticed she was leaking again... I couldn't figure out where it was coming from... I pulled the cap off of the filler tube and checked the O ring, there was a chunk of it missing... I couldn't get an O ring that size at the store we were at so I bought gasket maker and wiped things down, stuffed some in the gap and put the thing on and didn't move it again until first service...

do you maybe have an O ring somewhere that might be leaking?

Just throwing this out there... sometimes it is the simplest most obvious thing, yet all 3 of the mechanics overlooked this issue on my bike at the dealership and Toby never thought to look at the cap because he was trusting the guys who were prepping the bike. It never occurred to ME to check the cap at the dealership because it was a brand spanking new bike.

Mystery solved a fair amount of disassembly and the square shape in the gasket under the oil tank top was folded over in one corner. Too much oil in the oil tank can and does spill over between the two cases. When the tansfer case fills with the extra engine oil it will puke out the relief valve which is the least talked about component of the transfer case system. Because the engine oil is lighter than hypiod oil I suspect it will float and be barfed first.

Just started a thread on this very issue until I found the 1st pic on google and it lead me to this thread. Not going to rehash my story of today but I think I can relax a little. I think it'll be ok. I'll just change the oils and clean the mess off and run it and see what happens.
