Trunk & Fairing - what is the simplest solution? 3 Years, 7 Months ago
I eventually want a fairing and trunk on my new baby, what would you guys n gals suggest? I see a LOT of awesome looking bikes in the sig pics.
I also see a lot of true dual exhaust, how hard is it to do that? a pipe on each side?
we do a LOT of long long miles, how does it affect the engine staying cool? (I see on some pics the exhaust header pipe loops up and over the engine to come down on the left side)

and on this last weekend (we did 900 miles) I was having trouble keeping my right leg cool enough lol
Any tips on gear etc that would help with this? being short, and gravitationally challenged has it's drawbacks at times

Reckless fairing is the simplest. It bolts to the windshield brackets. Trunk buy the teunk and get either a wompus rack or the rack ultrastar makes. Ultrastars is better but you need the oem non quick release backrest side arms. I dont see any issues with my duals other than the backside of your knee can get a bit warm at a stop.

Dchopper Customs offers HD fairing brackets for the Roadstar. It allows you to run the Harley fairing on our bikes. Although, not the simplest route it is a great option. www.dchoppercustoms.com

Like jonsie said the hd fairing isnt a simple bolt on amd run in 10 minutes but the fit and finish is a lot better and you can run gauges. But this is a option if you intend a full time fairing.

Well I have the oem non quick release backrest side rails, it came stock with my bike =) getting a taller backrest bar for now, and have the luggage rack. We use a set of Tourmaster sissy bar bags at present but I dream of being able to just pop a trunk on lol and not have to wrestle the luggage on and off.

I will check these things out so I can start stuffing money away in a jar

When you get a trunk buy a quaility one or your gunna ask for trouble. Rattles, cracks, ect. And ultrastar does the racks on the side and is a very busy man so be patient.

I have the Reckless fairing, its good and a decent price. Like they said they make better ones but there is either a lot more work needed or they cost a bit more. I have heard mixed things about Tsukayu stuff but I have their saddle bags and love them. That route you could do bags, a trunk, and a fairing from the same place. Maybe talk them into a discount.

As for the heat on your right leg, get rid of that alien-head air cleaner.

A cheap option is to use a K&N solution, you just need to make some simple brackets.
Look at some of the forum pics, and a search will help you with the mounting.

The air cleaners come round, oval, shallow or deep.

RA-066V - Round, .813" offset, 2" deep, 6" diameter
RC-1980 - Oval, centered, 2" deep, 7"x4.5"
RA-076V - Oval, .5" offset, 2" deep, 7"x4.5"
RA-077V - Oval, .5 inch offset, 3" deep, 7"x4.5" (deeper than RC-1980 or RA-076V)

The K&N filters is the way to go. I have the RA66v on mine. They are very light and the brackets are just not needed. Mine has been on for several years with out a problem. Just clamp it on good and go. Although you will have to rejet your bike to use it. I also have the Reckless fairing. Not the best fit and finish, but cheaper than most. I would not go with the matuzu trunk! I have two in the garage that are junk. Poor hinges and locks, and both have busted bottoms. Buy an old Goldwing or Venture trunk and build to suit. Good luck.

If your bike is an 08 or later it is FI....no jetting needed.

As said above ...the HD fairing is not the easiest to mount but if you want to add gauges & switches (i.e.remote garage door opener) then it is the best route...I started off with a Memphis Shade...and it was nice. Good quality, finish etc. and really simple to click on & off....BUT....wouldn't ya know it...I then started looking at other bikes and wanted a stereo, gauges, etc...soooooo upgrading I did go....IMHO once you've put on the HD fairing...there's no further upgrade in fairings..
oh...and btw...from B.C. Canada
