Pipes! This group is the epitome of peer pressure 1 Year, 10 Months ago
With the exception of add on's my bike is totally stock. But after fighting to find bags that fit with my stock pipes... and after vowing not to spend money on pipes... YOU have talked me into it. TOTALLY your fault.

SO -

What do I want to get? I can tell you I've always thought our RS stock was a bit quiet for my taste. I'd like the deep, loud tones you hear with most harley pipes.. the kind of rumble you can feel in your chest when you fire the bike up. What pipes would you recommend to do this? And lastly, what would I need to have done (I'm not a mechanic even a little bit) to the bike as far as tuning for new pipes? My bike is a 06 1700 with a carb.

Thanks!

John

A lot depends on your future plans for the bike. If you think you might want hard bags, you'll want to go with some kind of duals for clearance. A lot of the bikes on here, mine included currently, are running Vance & Hines long-shots, or short-shots. The long-shots, with modded baffles, produce a nice hearty sound and lots of torque. The short-shots are a bit louder and lose a little bottom end power in exchange for top end power.

Look online at pictures and see what you like. Whatever you choose, you'll quite probably end up having to do some jetting as well to dial the bike back in. You can find tons of help here about that as well.

Don't rush into buying pipes without doing a little research. Your wallet will thank you.

Pipes are like buttholes. Everyone has them, and everyone likes theirs. Insane loud is fun for a little while, but riding hundreds of miles with them can get on your nerves.

If you just change the pipes and not the intake/air cleaner, you shouldn't have to do anything like rejetting. Pulling the AIS, if you haven't already done that, will stop the shotgun blast on decell.

Stock road star bags fit pretty good . What bags are you wanting is the real question here.

^^^^^^^
I wouldn't do anything other then getting rid of the AIS, to start with. There are instructions on the Tech Articles page, and you can get the block off plates at a variety of places or on EBay.

Search the forum, or maybe somebody has the link handy, with various YouTube clips or pipe style sounds, to see what's best.
Loud pipes can really get on your nerves, after a couple hundred miles.
2into1's will give the best low end and midrange performance. The V&H's or other brand styled LongShots look nice on the Roadies, and with a Geno's lowering kit for the stock bags, they still work.
Those who have gone with a true dual exhaust setup, seem to really like them, although the install can require a bit more thought.

129Drifters Cobra 2into1, sounds almost indentical to my older discontinued Roadhouse 2into1, when riding side by side on the highway. When matched for speed and rpms, the sound is like listening to a nice dual exhaust setup. At cruise, the sound is not overly loud, but when rolling on the throttle, it has a good bark.

IMHO, a decent baffle is a it improvement over no baffles, or the stock baffles that comes in the stock V&H's.

There are some pretty good vids on YouTube of people doing sound samples of various pipes, you can at least get a sense of them.

I agree with fireman, really loud pipes on a long trip will really tax the ears,so like the line from the Indiana Jones movie says "Choose wisely my son"

I really like the V&H longshots I have on mine. I got them from a member here. If you are patient and search the classifieds, and the facebook roadstar groups, you can often get a nice set of pipes used for a good price.
I had to have 02 bungs installed in mine, but that is because mine is a newer fuel injected R*

Be patient, do a lot of reading and shop around.

If you want big sound, I have a set of these pipes that should be available very shortly here. A buddy of mine is having me put on Freedom duals this weekend or next and he has no plans for the Hard Krome Sideburner that is on his ride right now.

The single massive out on these pipes make them rumble nicely and if you pull the baffle its even louder (obviously). Pipes are in great condition. Here are stock photos of them, if you are interested I will get some pics of the actual set you would be buying.

I'm sure we could work a rather nice price for you.

Stock pipes are not only too quiet but also way too heavy. Once you remove them and the gauddy brackets you will lose about, I don't know, 30 lbs.
Style of pipes and sound is a personal choice. Decide what style you like, based on the theme of bike you're going for, then decide if they fit your sound preference.
Like Silkentek said, I also have V&H longshots purchased from a member on here. For my taste they are not obnoxiously loud but give a good bark and torque when you let 'er go and let the horses run.

Edit: Just as the stock pipes are restrictive to performance so is the air intake system, so I would suggest doing both (which would require jetting) but the sound you're after will match the performance if you open her up and let her breath.
