Horn won't work 3 Years, 2 Months ago
Just installed new tires and taller sprockets on my 1995 Kawasaki Vulcan 800. Only thing left to do is to get the horn working. When I put a volt meter on the two wirew, I get 12 volts. Does this mean the circuit is good and the horn is bad? Am I missing something?

Be my guess.

Hit the horn terminals with a battery charger and see what happens. Get the polarity right.

Some horns have an adjustment screw in the center with a locknut on it. I have revived stuck diaphrams tweaking that screw while applying juice it it.

Are the two wires reading 12 volts only when the horn button is depressed ? If so, the horn is probably bad.

Yes, only when the horn button is pushed.

It may sound funny, but take it off and give it a couple of thumps on the work bench. Sounds like the reed may be stuck or have dirt dobber nests in it. You won't lose anything trying it. Worked for me a time or two.

Was just about to suggest a whack, or two, to get the diaphgrams to retreat in far enough to push against the contact points inside that make/break contact to the electromatic coil. That's how they work. Current to the magnetic coil, pulls the diaphgram in and pushes against the points, open the circuit, kills the magnetic pull, springs back, points close, repeats... Very fast.

The points oxidize from sitting too long so,hook some power to it and bang it around and see if you get any chirps out of it.

As for testing it, you are better off hooking a battery up to it. Some battery chargers don't work without a load on them.

If the windings in the electromagnetic coil is good and the contacts in there get jarred into doing what they're supposed to do, then the 'load' will be there.

It's a cheap attempt into getting a $15 part working.
