Bought a Yamaha Bolt 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Back at the end of July I started a thread asking about "breaking in a new engine - Yamaha Bolt".
I shared that I found someone in my town selling their 2015 Bolt for $5300.

IT ONLY HAD 738 MILES ON IT.

Obviously the owner didn't ride it much and hadn't even done the 600 mile service on it. I loved the idea of a virtually brand new bike but was concerned about the lack of proper break-in procedure. You guys assured me that that wouldn't/shouldn't be a deal breaker with modern motors the way they're built today.

Long story short, I bought it for $4700 and have been enjoying the hell out of it. I forgot how much fun a smaller, lighter bike is. Today it has 1760 miles on the clock. I've heard many of you say everyone should
have a couple bikes in the stable, and now I know why!!!

I bought a 2003 Patrick Racing 108ci Road Star and seldom ride the stock 2006 Star as the 108ci is much more fun. My friend has a souped up Harley Dyna that goes like stink. Faster than my 108ci but a kidney shaker and not a great long haul bike. I rode that bike for a couple hours. A great zippy puddle jumper for blasting around. For long trips, I would have to be medicated to endure the discomfort after 2 hours. But that is 2 hours of pure fun!

I can see the appeal a Bolt would have as a second bike.

Yes, I've enjoyed reading many of your posts about your 2 bikes and your friends Dyna, and your riding experiences. I like hearing what you have to say. Our riding styles are similar, and what we enjoy, and why.

Re:Bought a Yamaha Bolt 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
In my original post from above I said "long story short I bought it."

Now that I have a few more minutes, here is the long story. The back story.

It starts with my 30 something year old daughter Bethany. She has a 2009 sportster. When she got pregnant this year, for the first time with our first grand baby of the family, she elected to give up riding completely. She wants to sell the bike. I have it at my house and I started riding it and really fell in love with it. It's got character and soul. And pretty much just badass.

That's when I discovered a new found "fun" in riding a smaller bike. Since she wanted to sell it, and I thought it would be cool to still keep it in the family, I started thinking about buying it.

So I went on Craigslist to see what sportsters were selling for. And that's how I stumbled onto this Bolt. I was then torn between what I perceived as a really good deal (the Bolt) and the character and soul of the sportster (which the Bolt does not have, imo). The Bolt is a lot more comfortable to ride, but there's nothing that grabs you like the sportster does.

So I bought the bolt with the only money I had available. But I also want to buy her bike. Partly for the sentimental attachment that's grown on me, and because it's just a fun badass bike.

She just gave birth to a son, two weeks ago. I'm sure if he's anything like his mom, dad, and grand dad he'll be drawn to motorcycles before long. Who knows, maybe one day his first ride will be with grand dad, on mom's old bike!!!

That thing looks sharp. I have wondered how it rides with a passenger on it.
Does it have the power to still go? twowheeltherapy wrote:

WOW congratulations on the grandson.

You know until I saw these pictures I did not know how close the Bolt and Sportster are in appearance. Two bikes are much better than one that is for sure. I am guessing that I will end up with a third one in the future myself.

I highly recommend anyone looking for a two up, to ride one with your passenger first before buying. Even though Yamaha makes a passenger seat and pegs for the bolt, I cannot imagine it being very comfortable for long duration of travel.

Anything over 60 mph and it's really winding high. I keep looking for another gear. And the wind! Geeeeze! I didn't realize what a solid pig we have in the roadstar.

For me, it fits into a fun little lightweight solo buzzy around town scooter kind of category.

I never thought of the comparison either until I was literally comparing my decision on these two bikes. At 950cc, and it's styling, it seems quite obvious now that Yamaha's Bolt was designed to compete with Harley.

A funny side note to this, I have an old school, die hard Harley buddy that teases me to ride 3 seconds behind him. First when I had an older Goldwing (that he called "that Honda thing" and then again with my roadstar (a Yamahardly). When I told him about my torn decision delemma I was having, he said
"why buy an imitation when you can buy the real thing?"

When I brought it home, he was SHOCKED! He loved it! He was very impressed. He admitted he had no idea. When he was gawking all over it I said, "I know, but it's not the real thing."
He snapped back, "Hey, so what! Your riding what makes you happy!"

The first time we went out we stopped by his mechanics to order a part he needed, and had the guy come out to "check this thing out."

Congrats. Good looking bike, fast, etc. but the demo I rode was too cramped. My 800 Vulcan is more comfortable.
Be careful hotrodding it!
