Apparent death of another motorcycle forum 3 Months ago
Long before I purchased my first Road Star, I spent a good deal of time on the Yamaha Motorcycle Forum. I still visited it to see what was being discussed, but in the last month, posts were sparse. Wednesday, and the past few days, I've tried to access it , as part of a daily routine, only to find a page advising me that the website has been cancelled. After a very minor issue with one of my posts, I had inquired of the moderator that had deleted it, I told him that such a degree of censorship would kill the site. Apparently, I was right. I hope this clinic/forum lasts longer than my bike(s).

Well, its official. The owner of the website says it will shut down at the first of the year, unless someone buys/takes over, as it is taking too much of his time. Another victim of social media and such.

Re:Apparent death of another motorcycle forum 3 Months ago
I was out to that forum a few times myself. It was pretty lifeless even about a year ago. I found quite a lot of discussion on the net on the subject of dying forums. This one i thought had a good perspective on the value of forums (not that any of us need to be reminded about that here)....

Forums are not dead, but they are suffering from an identity crisis right now. There was a time when forums were where all the activity happened on the web. If you wanted real time discussion, you found it on forums. If you wanted social interaction, you found it on forums. If you were seeking high quality user generated content, you found it on forums. Nowadays the proliferation of social media sites has caused a competitive dynamic that has reduced overall time spent per session on forums, but this dynamic has also created an opportunity for forums to focus on their core strengths.

Forums are the best medium for many to many discussion around a subject of mutual interest. These were initially niche interests, but the accessibility to these topics has actually resulted in more people learning about these topics and that in turn keeps driving unique users to forum based properties. Forums are where you go to learn about a topic in its entirety. On a forum you can ask and answer questions but you can also share content whether it is something you have found, or something you have created. Sites like Quora allow you to ask and answer questions while sites like Reddit allow you to share content, but forums give you a comprehensive ability to do both in a way that is not limited by social or follower dynamics.

Another compelling feature of forums is that real identities are the exception, not the rule. While having discussions with users named furryfan72 and ninjasquid might be offputting at first, it forces you to focus on the quality of their thoughts and ideas and not how popular they are in real life. I personally love this merit based attribute of forums and I find it hard to reproduce this type of honest exchange of ideas on any other medium.

If you added up all of the people who post on forums and were somehow able to network them using common platforms, sign on methodologies, and forum centric search- you would have one of the most potent membership bases that has yet to be exploited fully on the web.

Take the example of a person who is a passionate and knowledgable scuba diver. They might share a few scuba pictures on Facebook or Pinterest, maybe they will tweet about a great dive. If they have a question, they could try posting it on Quora or Yahoo Answers. If they are very knowledgeable they could look for questions on these same sites and help out by providing their expertise, but none of these options allows you to immerse yourself in scuba. This is where forums come in- they are immersive and the experience is not replicated by any of the major social media platforms that you read about in the press.

Forums are wonderful. They need some technology upgrades and smart people to recognize their value so that they can continue to flourish well into the future.

I know this forum as well as some others have had participation drop drastically as soon as photobucket went from free to $80/month (or however much it is) to post pics.

You don't need PB to post pics. It may be needed to post multiple pics in the same post but not to post just 1 pic. The way I do it the pic will stay forever. All that you need to do is save a properly sized pic on your desktop, when you are done writing whatever you want in this post click on "Select Image file to attach" at the bottom of this post page, it will bring up a window to your desktop and choose that properly sized pic and it will post and never go away unless you edit it out. To size your pics go to "resize Images online" scroll to choose file and click on a pic you want to resize, then go to "custom" Type in "450" then click "resize" when it resizes drag and drop the resized pic on your desktop.

1 Choose Picture or Photo to Shrink Choose File

2 Select New Maximum Image dimension
760 Pixels 600 Pixels 350 Pixels 100 Pixels
75% 50% 25%
Custom
1000
maximum 1000px

3 Apply an image Special effect (Optional)
Greyscale Sepia

4 Set resized image quality (jpg compression)
Good Better Best

Yes, but there are few issues with that.

You can't post multiple pictures, like is done in a tech write up.
You can't click on it to get a larger picture, which is useful in a tech write up.
And it doesn't help for all the past pictures (in tech write ups..)

Posting by using he correct size was always possible.
But the most common advice for any new person here was "Get a Photobucket account".
Look back and see how often resizing a picture was the first option that was suggested to people.

Re:Apparent death of another motorcycle forum 3 Months ago
I'm aware of those issues. I also lost a butt load of pics a few years back when Adobe photoshop went pay only or whatever it was they did so I don't and won't use any host like PB. They can do what they did without warning and hold everyone hostage for the pics just like they did. My suggestion was for someone that just wants to post a pic and not multiple pics on 1 post. The common answer to posting pics has been "Get a PB account" for so long many may not know there is another way to post pics without PB. I know that every pic I have ever posted is still there. The transformation of my bike is still there. Even when you change your sig pic it changes every sig pic you ever had all the way back to when you first signed up here. Not mine they are all there in there original form. here is another and the others are still there and will be forever.

PhotoBucket fix discovered by Jaybo. It works!

There are currently some browser add-ons available for Firefox and Chrome to let you once again see those images.

Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/photobucket-embedded-fix/

Chrome:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/photobucket%20fix

(There are no guarantees these will continue to work as Photobucket could make changes at anytime to cause them to break. Also note if the member who posted in the thread your viewing has since deleted his or her account with Photobucket, there is no way to get the images back.)

Re:Apparent death of another motorcycle forum 3 Months ago
Here's a step-by-step for what works for me to attach one single picture to my post. When I want to string multiple pics I upload my resized pictures to tinypics.com

If you use this site you can follow these steps and attach just one picture.
http://webresizer.com/resizer/

1. On that site click on Browse.
2. Find your photo on your computer and double click on it.
3. Now on that resizer site, click the button that says "upload".
4. After it uploads, where it says "new size" - make sure it is set at 450
5. Then hit "apply changes", then hit "download"

Now open your RSC reply, write your post, then select Browse at the bottom where the option is to Select Image file to attach. Find your picture that you resized /downloaded (probably in your Download folder) and double click on it.

When you submit the reply the photo should appear in your post.... even though you may not see it when you hit "preview"... it should still appear in the post.

Like davej said, doing it this way you are not at the mercy of a site like Photobucket because this image is stored on RSC as a reduced file size and remains on this site permanently..... unless you go in and edit and delete it.
