Bike won't start... 7 Months, 1 Week ago
Hi everyone
I could use some technical expertise that I know thrives on here.
99 Roadstar. 3 month old battery that is around 12.5+- v. Hit the start button and all I get is a single click. All connections seem good. I even disconnected the ground wire, sanded it and reconnected it. No dice. I also tried jumping the bike (both terminal to terminal, then negative to ground) to rule out the battery. Again, nada.
Any ideas?
Thank you in advance.
Bill

Run a cable directly from the positive terminal of the battery to the terminal of the starter to see if the starter turns over.

+1 If you have a volt meter of 12v test light you can also check to see if you have voltage to both large terminals on the relay when you push the starter button. you more than likely have a bad starter relay. They are know to go bad. they are 1 of the weak spots on a R*

Where would I find that relay?

Under the left side cover. Follow the red lead from the battery, and it will connect to one lug on the relay. The other big lug, connects to the lead that goes to the starter. You can jump across those two big lugs, and the starter should spin, if the relay is bad.

Make sure the bike is in neutral when doing this. Your bypassing all the safety stuff, like the neutral safety switch and kickstand switch when you connect the battery directly to the starter. If its in gear, it'll try and leave without you.

Great tip. Hot wired + battery to starter. Bike turned over. Now, it's probably the relay ? Or the switch? The relay looks like a second rate mechanic (aka, me) could do it, no?

Most likely the relay. Don't go for a cheap fleabay relay, either.
Replace it with a warrior relay or upgrade to a ford starter relay.

Plus repeated pushing of the starter button will cause the relay to get very hot and stick in the closed position and keep voltage going to the starter.
