Jetting of my Road Star question 5 Years, 3 Months ago
First of all hello guys, and thank you for this great page full of info, tips and stories I've read in just a few days. My name is Mario and a few days ago I got a 2005 Road Star 1700, the owner installed V&H exhaust and Mikuni carb 102 inches, the sad thing is that he got really sick and never had the chance to take it to get the jetting done properly so I rode it with the choke on first notch all day Saturday because it stalls otherwise. I know it's just a needle that needs to be adjusted but I never touched one of these before and the carb it similar to dirt bikes but has much more that I've seen so just asking for a little help here or I'll be willing to pay someone to teach me in OC so I learn how to do it myself. I don't have any service manuals of the carb or bike, so I'll look it up online to see if I can get those to help me out. Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for the help guys
Regards
Mario

First off, from beautiful N/E Georgia.
Any idea how long the bike sat before you bought it ? If it sat for an extended amount of time you'll need to pull the carb apart & give it a good cleaning. You'll need to see which main jet is in there & adjust from there. Does it have the original Mikuni 40mm or a 42mm ? Totally different carburetors. Let us know what you're working with & we'll help you out.
Enjoy the ride !!

You don't mention if it has an after market air kit? And a "Mikuni" carb is stock, unless it was replaced with a 42hsr? If it was only pipes, then there is really no need to do a full jet change, remove AIS and tweak pilot screw is all that is usually needed. As far as needing to use choke to ride, really not a good idea, can foul plugs quick, but on the same note, how long did bike sit idle? Could be that the pilot jet is gummed up and that is the reason to use a continuous choke on condition.

Another option for a pipe change only, again, remove AIS, tweak pilot screw and add 1 washer to the stock needle set-up. Got this from my old wrench, a 40yr yamaha tech.

Mario from Texas. Does your carb look like this? HSR 42 If it does you have a Mikuni HSR 42 or HSR 45 maybe even a HSR 48. If not then it has the stock Mikuni 40mm. BTW click the blue HSR 42 link above to see the carb.

I'm back, I don't know how to recognize the carb you mention I only know it says 102 it's actually on my picture but I could pull out the air filter and try to look for specifications. The bike didn't sit that long because he's neighbor took it for rides the 2 months the previous owner wasn't using it, he has bikes as well so helped out.
