I don't believe Gram doesn't care! It's just that his time doing everything is over. It's like that song, "Turn Turn Turn"

If Grams not wanting to keep this one open and we start a new one it doesn't matter what Gram thinks, as long as we use a different name he has no say so in the forum operations. I mean it's already clear that he doesn't care about what happens to the place.

The point is keeping the 'clinic, not starting something new. I understand your anger towards Gram, but he has been funding the site out of his own pocket for years. His life has taken him away from doing more than security patches for the site. Facing retirement he needs to trim his costs and he wants to pass the site on to the users to see it continue. If no one were to step up, yes he would just turn it off. Happens every single day. So if he truly didn't care, he could just say screw it, and just turn it off. Please rethink your thoughts on the matter.

I'm pretty sure if Gram didn't care about the site he wouldn't have written more than a short "I'm retiring, have a good life" message & a closing date.

I have no idea at all what it takes to host a site. I've been here for several years and check in daily.

The attitude of RSC members is refreshing and positive in this day and age. I haven't posted any pictures other than my Sig one. I couldn't figure out how too. Heck, at 70, my kids are impressed that I can do online purchases.

I'm open for a yearly subscription or anything you IT folks come up with.

Just keep in mind that if we decide that the site can never generate revenue 'not used for operating expenses' than my employer is out, as would be any hosting he's offering.
This site has never been a cash cow but he's willing to invest time, money & resources into the site if it has the potential of a return.

I think it's pretty obvious that the site is going to remain either a free site or no site at all, that's one of Gram's 'conditions of use'.
Any revenue generated from the site to Rock River would be merchandise, ads & other things that would be decided once it's back up & running.
I'll still be involved but only in my off-time. My boss won't pay me to work on the site as a hobby.

Bubba, Your boss would advertise on the site and generate revenue from it. Win Win?
I'm in for donating my $$ for the cause.

Yeah, that's what he was thinking.
There would still be bills to pay regularly, primarily the cloud hosting for the forum.
I can virtually guarantee that ad revenue will not come close to paying for the cloud, much less any kind of profits.
I don't believe vBullettin requires a traffic level to be locked in and if not, we should start at the cheapest level & adjust as bandwidth/traffic requires.

As far as a GoFundMe site, they require a goal to be set & published.
I kind of wonder if that would actually stall when people see that the goal is close or reached ...

I'd rather see any funds raised for the forum go to a PayPal account.
That would make paying for the cloud easier as well as ease of accounting on the back end.

I have control over the shopping cart at www.BuyYamahaParts.com & I could add an item that donors could 'buy' virtually, at least for the start-up costs.
If I'm handling that (for example) I'd post a quarterly report or something to show where the money is going on the forum.
That way there would be some accountability & everyone could see that it really does cost money to have this place online.
I've managed the Rock River Powersports store PayPal & eBay accounts since 2008 without incident, I think I can handle an account for a website.
In a perfect world, there would be enough ad revenue generated that the forum would be self-supporting and no further fundraising would be required.

Advertising revenue would be accounted separately since that wouldn't involve any forum members (except me doing the work), nor cost anyone on the forum anything.
That's assuming there would even be any ad revenue. That's been a 'little to none' thing in the past.
I'm hoping that since this would be a 'company sponsorship' deal that I could turn that around, at least a little.
Some people will have to get past their hatred for 'stealerships' if that's going to fly at all.

Ideas - thoughts?

BK, I like the idea of paypal and the rest.

As for thoughts, do you have any plans to spread the workload / responsibilities / back-end accessibility among members?

My only reservation is, long term, the continued dependence on a single individual to handle it all. If at some point down the line you either get tired, find a new job, or you're boss decides it's not longer worth it, etc., then we're right back to where we are now. Is there a future migration path if need be?
