Yep .... Oil..... 7 Years, 11 Months ago
Read it, delete it, or just pass it by.... your choice. Switched to AMsoil sometime back. Researched it very well, hoever.. I noticed the Amsoil bottles do NOT have an API certification on it .... wonder why? Also noticed every article on the internet about amsoil was either by Amsoil or one of it's dealers. One blog even said synthetics were not worth the extra money unless you were under severe operating conditions..... thinking about it... I never had a problem with Valvoline Motorcycle oil for 3.99 per Qt and a supertek filter .. about $3. Is Amsoil as good as Mobile one? Are Synthetics worth the extra money? Anyone have any facts other than white papers published by the mfg of the oil that wins the compitition?

Just want to stir the pot huh?

OK, just for the record, I switched to Mobile 1, and have noticed that it runs quieter, and my gas mileage did go up, but I also started to use just Shell Nitrogen, and that could account for some of it too?

Hard to say. But as long as it works for ya....

I've only used Mobil 1 because it's readily available around here and it also quieted the motor (no more "sewing machine" rattle from the original Yami oil), so I have no complaints. I'm always open to other ideas on oil for our scoots, but I figure "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

My Wally*World has the new packaged Shell Rotella T 5w-40 Synthetic in a 4 qt jug for like $19, I think it was... and best of all, on the back of the new packaging it now says it meets JASO requirements!

What could be better than that?

Cannot find Mobile One Motorcycle oil in my small town... Amsoil is delivered to my door.... runs around $8 per qt plus shipping..... I really think the top brands are likely equal or close.... only thing... amsoil is not API certified.... is Mobile one?

Amsoil report is done by an independent lab. The thing about synthetic is it coats and that isn't a bad thing all in all. The other positive is stability in heat it is a longer oil change interval. Nothing wrong with reg oil ie valvoline you mentioned, in theory you would spend the same cash at change of oil interval. Depending on use and region heat or long travel the frequency you ride and the miles you log.
You take a few trips a year live in hot region you run short hops a lot synthetic.

You only run a couple thousand miles a year oil would be okay. You loose the start up protection but at long intervals between starts don't think you would get that much benefit anyhow.

These are just my opinion and in simplest terms. My oil knowledge is based on what I read by lab test. This could be a very long reply but I just hit the high lights. I could go deep into the additive components and how it really effects us.
Truth be told these bikes could run on any oil without friction modifiers. You would most likely be fine. They are work horses and I have read about guys going way over intervals for change. Don't recommend that but they reach high milage (100,000+) nonetheless.

Just a note what you like is what you should use. I know we say oil is beat to death but it makes me search more and understand the minute of it all.

If you change oil every 3K miles, and you don't run in extreme temps, you won't get your money out of synthetics, They are better just because they hold their properties longer and through more extreme operating conditions especially Hot and Cold.

I'm not looking at an Amsoil bottle right now, but I can tell you they are API certified and then some, and some more over the best next to that. You can't do any better than amsoil for your bike, I can assure you. Now if you want to toss in a price discussion, you can do pretty darn close cheaper.

Here's your link. API certified.
http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/mcv.aspx

You can put some really crappy oil in your bike and have no problems. Problems develop over time. If you ride 3K miles a year, you can use the absolute worst oil like Yamalube and have no problems for 10 years, but if you were to compare the inside of a same engine with same exact storage and operation, the other having used Amsoil, then you would notice the difference. http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-oil/

If you were to hop on your bike and want to go on a 3 to 10K mile trip on one oil, you'd be best served with Amsoil and their oil filter. They warranty it up to double factory interval, who else does that? I'm asking? Mobile 1? No, Red Line, No, Shell, (Good stuff though) No, Only Amsoil, 1st in synthetics and always way ahead of the game.

Just finished my oil change with 20-50 Amsiol and a chrome Amsiol filter. I work for an auto parts company in Canada and it still cost me 21.50 for the filter and 12.86 a quart, but I will not be cheap with oil, tires or brake pads..I run Amsoil for 12,000 kilometers so I get my money back and my bike runs totally quiet...When I got it the past owner ran Yamalube and it sounded like a sewing maching..
Cheers

I used Mobile 1 fully synthetic oil for cruisers. Auto Zone has a nice bikers section in my area. Not all of them carry these items. I first notice my clutch working much smoother in down shifting to 1st gear. The regular oil was much rougher. Oil said it was rated for wet clutches too. The same store is working on providing Amsoil soon and my try that oil next time and see if it improves current conditions. Summer here is brutal and like the synthetic for the air cooled bike. Seems to run somewhat cooler too.
